Thrash’s Double-Double Leads WBB in Loss at Miami

2/5/2025 9:04:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Junior posted 11 points and 10 rebounds in the road loss

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)Brooklyn Thrash posted her third career double-double (11 points and 10 rebounds) and nine different players scored at least two points as the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team dropped a 68-45 decision at Miami University, Feb. 5, inside Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio. The Eagles (1-20, 0-11 Mid-American Conference) held an early lead, but a run by the RedHawks (13-8, 6-5 MAC) opened up the game in the second that EMU could not overcome.

How It Happened
The Eagles came out strong in the opening minutes of the game as they built an 11-6 lead at the first media timeout. Sisi Eleko (Montreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius) tallied five points while both Thrash (Wayne, Ohio/Elmwood/Canisius) and Elena Cabello (Malaga, Spain/IES Meditteraneo) drained a three-pointer as Eastern held Miami to 27.3 percent shooting in the early going. The RedHawks closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to bring the score to 16-14 in favor of EMU with both Eleko and Olivia Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side) leading the team with five points each.

The RedHawks' late first quarter run carried into the second as a 14-0 run led to the hosts taking a 22-16 lead at the media break. The Eagles were held to 0-of-4 shooting while in the early going but held a slim 7-5 advantage on the glass to stay close. Out of the timeout, Jada Williams (Williamstown, N.J./Gloucester Catholic/St. Peter's) collected an offensive rebound and scored to halt the run. Thrash hit her second triple of the game to end the scoring as the Eagles trailed, 30-24, at the break.

Miami opened the half on an 11-0 run before a pair of Eleko free throws got the Eagles on the board. Following the first stop in action, Thrash intercepted an inbound pass and scored the first bucket of the second half as the RedHawks built a 49-28 advantage on a 21-4 run to open the quarter. In the final three minutes of the third, Smith knocked down her second three-pointer while Thrash scored off an offensive rebound, sending the game into the fourth with the Eagles trailing, 55-34.

Eastern came out strong to open the fourth with an 8-2 run of its own as Kyndal Lewis (Belton, Mo./Belton) scored on a strong post move before both Olivia Westphal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park/Duquesne) and Dara Capaldi (East Detroit, Mich./La Lumiere (Ind.)) connected on three-pointers. The RedHawks went on an 11-0 run to rebuild their advantage before Thrash picked up her 10th rebound of the game and added her ninth point on a free throw, leaving her one point shy of her third career double-double.

Game Notes
» Brooklyn Thrash finished the game with team-highs in both points (11) and rebounds (10) to record her third career double-double and her first this year. Thrash, who last achieved the feat Feb. 22, 2024, with Canisius at Manhattan, saw her rebound total surpass her season best of seven and tied her career best set twice while playing with Canisius last year. Thrash also led the team with three steals and added one block and two assists.
» Olivia Westphal finished with one three-pointer to bring her season total to 50, leaving her two shy of doubling her season total from last year when she made 26. Westphal finished with four points in the game and a team and career-high two blocked shots.
» Dara Capaldi scored three points to mark a season-high while doubling her point total on the year. After sitting out with an injury, she returned to the line up to score her first points since making one free throw at Michigan State, Nov. 11.
» Chelsea Bishop (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) scored a career-high five points, surpassing the four she scored twice earlier this year, including at Kent State (Jan. 29). She also made her second three-pointer of the season.
» The Eagles finished 8-of-22 from behind the arc to extend their current streak to 124 consecutive games with at least one made three-pointer. Brooklyn Thrash hit the first three of the game just 36 seconds into the game to extend the streak. The last EMU failed to drain a long-distance shot came Nov. 29, 2020, when Eastern finished 0-of-15 from three-point range at home against UIC.

Historical Notes
» With the loss, the Eagles fell to 1-20 overall and 0-11 in MAC play while the RedHawks improved to 13-8 overall and 6-5 in league action.
» Eastern fell to 25-44 all-time against Miami and 12-21 when playing in Oxford. The RedHawks have won two consecutive games in the series after the Eagles had won six in a row.
