Baseball Earns First Series Win of 2025, Beats Central Arkansas, 14-6

2/23/2025 6:40:00 PM | Baseball

Eastern scored 12 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win

CONWAY, Ark. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team combined to score 12 runs in the fifth and sixth innings, earning its first series win of the season, scoring a season-high 14 runs to beat the University of Central Arkansas Bears, 14-6, in non-conference action at Bear Stadium, Sunday, Feb. 23.

The win improved the Eagles' record to 2-3 (0-0 MAC) on the season, while the Bears shifted to 1-4 (0-0 ASUN).

Junior Ethan Davis (Brownstown, Ind./Brownstown Central/Marian/Frontier C.C.) earned the win after entering the game in relief effort. He pitched 3.1 innings, allowing zero runs and three hits while striking out four.

Offensively, four Eagles recorded multiple hits and RBI, three of which drove in three apiece.

How it Happened
Central Arkansas opened up the scoring in the first inning as a runner from third scored on a bases-loaded balk call, giving the Bears the 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles evened the score in the second off a Connor Walsh (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) RBI single to center field, scoring Bruce Jellison (Hartland, Mich./Hartland/Wabash Valley), for his first of three RBI on the day.

Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich./Essexville Garber) homered for the first time this season with a solo shot to center field in the fifth, giving the Eagles the 2-1 lead, before the Bears scored three in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead, 4-2.

Davis came in to relieve Tyler Kapa (Waterford, Mich./Ketering/Alma/Mott C.C./Davenport) to start the bottom of the fifth, after Eastern plated six in the top half of the inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Giano Zuccaro (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea Midpark/Charleston). Kapa finished his day allowing six earned runs off seven hits while striking out and walking four.

The potent EMU offense erupted for another six runs in the sixth inning, partly thanks to a two-RBI double by Kevin Krill (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland/Oakland/Kalamazoo Valley C.C.). The Eagles closed the inning with a 14-6 lead after Davis held the Bears to no runs in the bottom half.

Davis was relieved in the eighth after pitching 3.1 innings, allowing no runs and three hits while striking out three. The score would remain 14-6 in favor of the Eagles as freshman Fischer Hendershot (Flushing, Mich./Flint Powers) came in to close the game in the ninth as the Eagles secured their first series win of the season.

Game Notes
» The Eagles secured their first series win of the season and their first since taking two of three from Central Michigan in the 2024 campaign, March 28-30.
» Eastern's 14 runs are its most of the season and the most since it scored 15 in a 15-6 win over Ohio in the first game of a doubleheader, April 13, 2024.
» Offensively, the Eagles set season highs in runs (14) and RBI (13). This marks their first time eclipsing the double-digit mark in both categories this season.
» Seven of the nine EMU starters recorded at least one hit.
» Walsh set career highs with two hits and three RBI. The game marked his first multi-hit game of the season and his second with multiple RBI.
» Krill turned in his second multi-hit contest of the year and his first driving in multiple runs.
» Hugo homered for the first time this season and 21st time of his career. He also drove in two runs for his second consecutive multi-RBI outing. Additionally, Hugo's homer marked the team's eighth of the season, a figure that is tied for the most in the conference.
» Davis earned the first win of his Division I career.
» Zuccaro drove in a season-high three runs, his first multi-RBI day of the season and third as an Eagle.
» With two hits, Jellison recorded his team-high fourth multi-hit game of the season. He stands second in the MAC individually with 10 hits this year. After scoring a single-game season-high and conference-high three runs in the win, his total runs scored (eight) stand as the most in the MAC.
» After committing no errors, the Eagles have done so in two straight games for the first time in the Robbie Britt era and first since they did so in two consecutive games against Kent State, May 13-14, 2023.

Historical Notes
» Sunday's game marked the second between the Eagles and Bears. Eastern now holds a 2-0 lead in the all-time series.
» After knocking 11 hits, the Eagles have tallied double-digit hits in four of their first five games to start the season for the first time in the modern statistical era (1999-present).
» With Hugo's homer, the Eagles have recorded at least one home run in the first five games of the season for the first time in the modern statistical era (1999-present).
» The series win marks the earliest in a season for the program since it won its opening series of the 2021 season, sweeping Alabama State on the road in a two-game set, Feb. 27-28.
» Eastern's 12 total runs in the fifth and sixth innings are the most runs scored in two innings of play since the Eagles also plated 12 total runs in the fifth and sixth innings in a 19-4 win over Bowling Green, May 1, 2022. That day, EMU scored eight in the fifth and four in the sixth.
