ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track and field teams wrapped the indoor regular season with a strong showing at the Silverston Invitational, hosted across Washtenaw County, by the University of Michigan, at the U-M Indoor Track Building, Friday, Feb. 21.
The Eastern programs combined for nine first-place finishes, 24 personal-best (PR) marks, and one mark that landed inside the program top-10 leaderboards. Notably, Nicolette Lewis (Douglasville, Ga./Hoover) won the women's weight throw with a personal-best 16.43m (53-11.00) mark, ranking her 10th in program history.
How it Happened – Women
Sophomore Paige Marchant (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) was the top miler on the women's side, finishing in 4:55.50. The Eagles' relay team of Mia Biehl (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), Tijana Japundzic (Belgrade, Serbia/Technical School "New Belgrade"), Demetria Henderson (Tampa, Fla./Freedom), and Delphine Drath (Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany/Carl-Friedrich-Gauss-Schule Hemmingen) won the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:56.40.
EMU senior Samantha Smith (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester/Tiffin) set the top mark in pole vault, reaching 3.55m (11-07.75).
The Eagles had five athletes finish in the top seven of the long jump, with freshman Shay Clemetson (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) setting the top mark at a personal-best 5.83m (19-01.50). Alimot Alowonle (Lagos, Nigeria/Tindip College/New Orleans) finished third with a 5.67m (18-07.25) mark, while Kaydence Doxley (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) cleared 5.63m (17-07.00), setting a PR for a fifth-place outing. Nene Garner (Powell, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) finished sixth with a 5.33m (17-06.00) jump, and Ashtan Winfrey (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric Early College) placed seventh with a 5.29m (17-04.25) mark.
Alowonle set the top mark in triple jump, finishing with a 12.09m (39-08.00) showing. Mariia Yelanska (Dnipro, Ukraine) finished third with an 11.89m (39-00.25) jump, followed by Mariah Taylor (East Lake, Fla./East Lake) at 11.54m (37-10.50) in fourth and Nyla Joseph-Guevara (Coral Springs, Fla./Fort Lauderdale) in fifth at 11.20m (36-09.00).
The Eagles also saw success in the weight throw, placing the top-three throws for the event. Lewis placed first with a 16.43m (53-11.00) throw, a mark that stands 10th in EMU program history and a personal-best. Isabella Brent (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) finished in second with a 16.27m (53-04.50) throw, and Aleah Johnson (Botkins, Ohio/Botkins) finished third with a 16.24m (53-03.50) mark.
How it Happened - Men
The Eastern men set 14 personal bests in the final tune up before the MAC Championships next week, with Formula Thompson (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Nebraska) winning the triple jump with a 14.39m (47-02.50) mark, and Leland Godfrey (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral/Sacramento State) winning shot put at 14.57m (47-09.75).
In the high jump, Ousman Kamara (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) and Lucky Fiaku (Nimo, Nigeria/Busy International Secondary) tied for first, each jumping 2.00m (6-06.75).
