Hannah Thompson netted 70th-minute goal
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Redshirt junior Ella Holland produced an all-time great performance for the Eastern Michigan University soccer team, making 20 saves to equal the Mid-American Conference record in a 1-1 draw at Kent State University Thursday, Oct. 2, at Zoeller Field.
Holland's (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody/Samford) 20 saves are the second-most by any keeper in the nation this season, one short of the top mark in Division I. Holland's 20 saves are also the most by a MAC keeper in 26 years, matching the marks set by Kent State's Cherie Brusky (1997) and Toledo's Jennifer Hoffman (1999).
Senior Hannah Thompson (Schoolcraft, Mich./Schoolcraft) scored Eastern's goal in the 70th-minute before the Golden Flashes finally broke through with an equalizer seconds later.
How It Happened
Despite being outshot by the Golden Flashes, 10-2, in the first half, EMU limited KSU's chances to keep the match scoreless through the intermission.
The second half was a different story as Kent State immediately put pressure on the Eastern backline. Holland made a trio of saves in a 31-second span as a hectic scene in front of the Eastern net also featured a shot that ricocheted off the inside of the post and rolled across the face of the goal before the Eagles were able to clear the ball.
Holland and the Eagles' backline continued to fight off KSU chances before Eastern flipped the match in the 70th minute with freshman Kate Cerveny (Elizabeth City, N.C./Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies) drawing a foul just outside of the box.
Junior Rosalie Takacsy (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) took the ensuing free kick, sending a lofted left-footed ball toward the near post that found the head of the streaking Thompson, who sent home the match's first goal.
Eastern's momentum was short-lived as Kent State finally broke through roughly 25 seconds later to level the match.
The Eagles fended off four attempts from the Golden Flashes in the final 7:30 to earn one point.
Game Notes
» Eastern moved to 4-5-2 overall (2-1-2 MAC) while Kent State moved to 4-4-4 overall (2-2-1).
» Kent State held a 31-3 advantage in shots and a 7-0 margin in corner kicks.
» Thompson, who scored twice against Kent State as a freshman in 2022, netted her first goal of the season and first since Oct. 16, 2022, at Western Michigan.
» Takacsy posted her second assist of her career and first since Oct. 6, 2023, against Miami.
» Juniors Sarah Van Euwen (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) and Takacsy and senior Meghan Heath (Medina, Ohio/Medina/Canisius) played all 90 minutes of the match. Van Euwen has played 90 minutes in 16-straight matches, extending to the last five contests of the 2024-25 season. Takacsy's full 90 is her fourth of the season while Heath did so for third time after playing all 180 minutes of the first two matches.
Historical Notes
» Eastern Michigan leads the all-time series, 15-14-2.
» Holland's 20 saves broke Eastern's all-time single-match record by three. The record was previously owned by Monique Budani, set Sept. 3, 2018, against Michigan State. Her 20 saves are an EMU keeper most against a MAC school since Nikki Allen tallied 14 against Kent State, Sept. 19, 2004.
» Eastern conceded just one goal when allowing 30+ shots for the first time since Aug. 22, 2010, when Michigan scored just once on 32 attempts.
» The Eagles tallied just three shots, but still secured a draw. EMU last had three shots or fewer and earned a draw or better in a 1-0 win at Illinois State, Aug. 27, 2010.
» Thursday's match also marks the first time that Eastern has been outshot by at least 28 and still produced a draw since at least the 2006 season.
