Men's Cross Country Takes First, Women Take Third at George Dales Invitational

The men's first-place finish marks their first occurrence of consecutive first-place outings since the 2020 season

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country programs traveled west to the George Dales Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan University at Prairies Golf Club in Kalamazoo, Mich., with the men placing first in 8k (35 points) and the women finishing third in the 6k (69 points).
The men's first-place finish marks the first time they have notched consecutive meet wins since the Covid adjusted 2020 season, when they placed first at the Falcon Invitational (35 points), Nov. 7, and first at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships (39 points), Nov. 21.
A total of five schools competed in the meet, including Eastern Michigan, Oakland University, Central Michigan University, Bowling Green State University, and Western Michigan University.
It was a smaller field in both races, as the women's race had 63 runners while the men's race had 38. 16 from Eastern Michigan raced in the women's race and 10 competed in the men's race.
In the women's 6k, the Eagles had two runners place in the top 10 including the winner of the race, Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hague), who cruised to a first-place finish in a personal-best, 20:14.5, finishing 17 seconds ahead of the runner-up, and marking the first individual win of her career as well as the first occurrence of consecutive top-three finishes. She placed second (5K - 17:36.8) in Eastern's last race, the Jeff Drenth Memorial, Aug. 30. Additionally, Anita Zaro (Timișoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) came in ninth place, finishing in 21:27.8.
The women had five runners score in the race. Along with Moreno and Zaro came Lucy Jones (Haverhill, England/Normanhurst School), Anna Bathellier (Ile d'Yeu, France/College Les Sardieres), Liv Hatch (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso), Chloie Mutsa (Mesick, Mich./Cadillac) and Cora Henderson (Courtice, Ontario/Courtice Secondary) who had finishes of 15, 21, 23, 29 and 34, respectively. The team finished with 69 points, good for a third-place finish behind Central Michigan's 59 points and Bowling Green's 42 points.
The Eagles had a total of four athletes break 22 minutes in the women's 6k, while 13 of them set a career-best mark.
Four athletes from Eastern Michigan came in the top 10 in the men's 8k, led by Sam Peterson (Charveloix, Mich./Charlevoix), who covered the 4.9-mile course in 24:23, finishing second. Peterson's second-place finish marked his first occurrence of consecutive races with a top-three finish, as he placed third (5K - 14:56.9) in Eastern's opening meet, the Jeff Drenth Memorial, Aug. 30.
The other three in the top 10 were Ronan Codyre (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College), Ty Dailey (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), and Lachlan Cornelius (Queensland, Brisbane, Australia/Anglican Church Grammar School), who had times of 24:45.5 (fourth), 24:54.2 (fifth) and 25:09.4 (ninth), respectively.
In addition to these four runners, the Eagles had two other runners score in the race in Isaac Garcia (Greely, Colo./South County), AJ Hawkins (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) and Joey Furlong (Deer Park, Ill.) who had 15 and 19 points, respectively.
Six athletes broke 26 minutes in the men's 8k, while six male harriers also secured a personal-best time.
