Cross Country Completes Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country programs traveled out-of-state for the first time this year to the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, at the Burke Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind. The women raced in the blue division 5k and the men raced in the gold division 8k Friday, Oct. 4. Eastern also had student-athletes compete in both the women's open 5k and the men's open 8k.
The Eastern women placed 15th in the blue 5k, scoring 418 points, while they placed fifth in the open 5k, posting 135 points. The men's team ended up with 150 points in the Gold 8k to finish in third place. They did not score in the men's open 8k due to not having enough athletes.
The race became the first time this year that a runner on the women's team broke 17 minutes in the 5k, with Paige Marchant (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) coming in at a time of 16:44.4 to take 27th place overall in her season debut. Other times of note for the race were Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hague), in 17:00.4 (51st), Anita Zaro (Timișoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) in 17:27.2 (94th), and Lucy Jones (Haverhill, England/Normanhurst School), in 17:52.2 (132nd).
The women had five runners score in the Blue 5k, joining Marchant, Moreno, Zaro, and Jones was Anna Bathellier (Ile d'Yeu, France/College Les Sardieres), who finished in 18:02.9 (151st).
Runners who scored in the women's open 5k were Kayla Muir (Ida, Mich./Ida/Stautzenberger), Sophie Emin (Easton, Pa./Easton Area/Rutgers), Frankie Moore (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills), Laisette Rachal, and Alynna Wilson (Lebanon. Ohio/Lebanon) who had scores of 19, 22, 29, 31 and 34 points.
The men's Gold 8k saw Eastern Michigan score 150 points. Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix) led the way for the third consecutive meet with a time of 24:24.5 to take 10th overall. Other times of note included Ty Dailey (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) (24:25.6 - 11th), Ronan Codyre (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College) (24:48.4 - 31st), and Isaac Garcia (Greely, Colo./South County) (24:53.8 - 36th).
The men had five runners score. Joining Peterson, Dailey, Codrye, and Garcia was Kian Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College), who finished in 25:28.2 for a 72nd place finish.
Four individuals broke 18 minutes on the women's side in the 5k distance and four broke 25 minutes in the men's 8k distance.
