Cross Country Travels West to Kalamazoo for George Dales Invitational

The women's 6k and men's 8k races will begin at 10 a.m. and 10:40 a.m., respectively

MEET INFORMATION
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University cross country programs are set to hit the road for the George Dales Invite, hosted by Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich., Friday, Sept. 20th at Prairies Golf Club.
 
The women's 6K race is scheduled to go off first at 10 a.m., and the men's 8K will start at 10:40 a.m.
 
Friday's race will mark the first time that the men's team has been to the event, and the first time the women's team has attended since 2019.

EMU WOMEN RANKED IN GREAT LAKES REGION
The Eastern women are currently ranked 10th in the Great Lakes Region, per the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). They are one of five Mid-American Conference (MAC) teams represented in the poll, and stand as the third-highest MAC team on the leaderboard behind the University of Toledo (fourth), and Ohio University (eighth).
 
MAC MEN'S RUNNER OF THE WEEK
After his first race of the season, junior Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix) was named MAC Men's Runner of the Week for the first time in his career, Sept. 3. Peterson placed third in the 5K at the Jeff Drenth Memorial, Aug. 30, in a personal-best 14:56.9. Additionally, he was the highest placing MAC finisher of the race.
 
LAST TIME AT THE GEORGE DALES INVITATIONAL
In 2019, the women came in first place overall with 17 points. In that meet, Eastern had eight of the top 10 finishers in the race as only the Eagles and Broncos competed. Karlie Swanson went on to post the best time in the race with a 17:20.96 effort.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles were at the Jeff Drenth Memorial, hosted by Central Michigan University, Aug. 30, and produced good results to start the season. The men finished in first place with 31 points, led by a third-place finish from Peterson. The women came in second place with 38 points, led by Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hague), who tallied a time of 17:36.8.
 
STRONG CAREER-OPENING RACE
Freshman Lucy Jones (Haverhill, England/Normanhurst School) placed fourth in the first race of her career, competing the 5K in 18:11.5 at the Jeff Drenth Memorial, Aug. 30.
 
PERSONAL BESTS
Most recently at the Jeff Drenth Invitational, Aug 30, saw 24 athletes set a personal best in the 5k.
 
UP NEXT
Eastern Michigan will be back racing Friday, Oct. 4, when they travel to the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
