Men's, Women's Cross Country Place First and Second in Season-Opening Meet

SHEPHERD, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's cross country programs opened their 2024 season running the 5k at the Jeff Drenth Memorial, hosted by Central Michigan University at Shepherd High School in Shepherd, Mich., Friday, Aug.30.
The Eagles' men's team finished first with 31 points and the women's squad placed second, posting 45 points.
A total of eight schools raced in the meet, including Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Concordia University, Michigan State University, Lansing Community College, Cornerstone University, Grace Christian University, and Alma College.
The women's race featured 112 harriers and 101 athletes competed in the men's race.
All 14 Eastern men who raced set a persona-best, along with 10 women.
The men's race saw four athletes from Eastern Michigan come in the top five. Including Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix) in third at 14:56.9, Lachlan Cornelius (Queensland, Brisbane, Australia/Anglican Church Grammar School) in fourth at 14:58.4, and Ty Dailey (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) coming in fifth at 14:59.6. Ronan Codyre (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College) placed sixth, clocking in at 15:16.9. Joey Furlong (Deer Park, Ill./Barrington) finished up the scoring for the Eagles, placing 19th in 15:45.2.
In the women's race, the Eagles had three athletes notch a top 10 finish. Including Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hague) who took second place in 17:36.8, Lucy Jones (Haverhill, England/Normanhurst School) in fifth at 18:11.5 and Anita Zaro (Timișoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) in eighth in 18:20.5.
In their first collegiate race, Cora Henderson (Courtice, Ontario/Courtice Secondary) and Liv Hatch (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) scored for the Eagles. Henderson placed 12th in 18:34.2, while Hatch slotted immediately behind in 13th in 18:41.3.
The Eagles had seven athletes total break 16 minutes in the men's competition. Additionally, seven Eagles broke 19 minutes in the women's race.
