11 Track & Field Student-Athletes to Compete at NCAA East Prelims

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A total of 11 Eastern Michigan University track and field student-athletes will further their postseason competition at the 2024 NCAA East First Round, hosted by the University of Kentucky at the UK Track & Field Facility in Lexington, Ky., Wednesday-Saturday, May 22-25.
Meet Information/How to Follow
The meet will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Fans can follow the Eagles along using the live result and watch links found on the EMU track and field schedule pages. A post-meet recap will be posted to EMUEagles.com following the completion of the contest.
The men will send seven athletes to the meet. The Eagles qualified two hurdlers in the 110m. Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md./Digital harbor/Barton C.C.) will return to the meet yet again after breaking his own program record and a MAC Outdoor Championships meet record with a 13.53 first-place finish in the 110m hurdles. For his efforts, Williamson was named Most Co-Outstanding Performer and selected to the All-MAC First Team, May 15.
Along with Williamson, freshman Kayenn Mabin (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) will compete in the event after shattering his previous career-best (14.14) with a 13.94 third-place finish at the conference meet.
The freshman throwing duo of Ryan Johnson (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) and Jake McEachern (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) will both see action in the hammer throw after the two went one and two, both earning All-MAC honors at the conference meet, May 9. Johnson is currently seeded 13th with his longest heave of the season being 66.74m (218-11), while McEachern is slotted 30th with a 63.65m (208-10) mark.
Ronnie Brandal (Huron, Ohio/Huron) will compete in the 800m prelims as he is seeded 48th in 1:48.47 after finishing as the runner-up in the 800m (1:52.32) at the MAC Outdoor Championships last weekend, May 9-11. Joining Brandal on the distance team is Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's Kitchener) who will run the 1,500m as he is seeded 28th with a 3:40.92 mark.
Formula Thompson (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Nebraska) will bounce in both the long and triple jump. Thompson is 28th in the triple jump via his 15.57m (51-01.00) bound at the MAC championships, a leap that earned him a first team selection. He stands 42nd in the long jump with a 7.58m (22-08.00) leap.
The Eastern women will see four student-athletes do battle on the national stage.
Kyra Buffen (Columbus, Ga./Buford/Benedict) will compete in the triple jump after winning the event at the MAC Outdoor Championships for the Eagles for the first time since 1999 with her personal-best 12.64m (41-05.75) bound.
Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) enters as the women's top seed as she is seeded 13th in the hammer throw with her school record 62.01m (203-05) mark.
On the heels of being dubbed All-MAC Second Team, Esme Davies (Lake District, England/Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) will run in both the 5,000m and 10,000m. Her program record time of 33:30.93 has her seeded 40th in the 10,000m while slotting 33rd in the 5,000m with a season-best time, 15:59.07.
Anita Zaro (Timirsoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) rounds out EMU's female competitors as she will run the 3,000m steeplechase, entering the meet as the No. 45 seed with her personal-best time 10:24.26, a mark that earned her third-place at the conference meet.
