11 Eagles took part for the right to compete for a national championship

LEXINGTON, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track and field programs concluded the 2024 outdoor season as 11 student-athletes battled for the right to compete for a national championship at the NCAA East Prelims at the UK Track & Field Facility, on the campus of the University of Kentucky, Wednesday-Saturday, May 22-25.
How it Happened – Men
Competing Wednesday and Friday, the men's performances were highlighted by Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md./Digital Harbor/Barton C.C.), who advanced to the quarterfinals in the 110m hurdles with a 19th-place (13.90) finish in the semifinals. The performance marked his second consecutive season advancing to the quarterfinals as he broke the school record in the event for the first time in his career with a 13.65 clip in the first round.
Williamson missed the qualifying list in the quarterfinals by six spots as he finished 18th in 13.87.
Freshman Kayenn Mabin (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) also competed in the event, placing 44th in 14.44.
The hammer throw saw two Eastern men compete in freshmen Ryan Johnson (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) and Jake McEachern (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive). Johnson placed 27th with a 61.42m (201-6) heave, while McEachern slotted 33rd, tossing 60.08m (197-1).
Formula Thompson (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Nebraska) out-performed his seed in the long jump as he entered seeded 42nd and finished 36th, leaping 7.06m (23-2). He also competed in the triple jump on Friday, finishing 37th with a 15.10m (49-6.50) bound.
Representing the men's distance team, Ronnie Brandal (Huron, Ohio/Huron) ran the 800m and bested his seed as crossed the finish line in 1:54.30, placing 47th. Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's Kitchener) battled in the 1,500m, clocking in at 3:48.95 for a 42nd-place outing.
How it Happened – Women
Three Eastern women out-performed their respective seeds, led by Esme Davies (Lake District, England/Queen Elizabeth Grammar School), who did so in both the 10,000m and 5,000m. Originally seeded 40th in the 10,000m, Davies placed 29th in the event in 33:52.15. In the 5,000m, she placed 32nd in 16:28.12, topping her original No. 33 ranking.
Also competing for the Eagles was Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South), who earned the women's highest finish of the meet with a 17th-place outing in the hammer throw via her 59.15m (194-0) mark.
Two other EMU women bested their seeding on Saturday. Kyra Buffen (Columbus, Ga./Buford/Benedict) leaped to 39th-place in the triple jump, soaring 12.24m (40-2). Joining her was Anita Zaro (Timisoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport), who ran the 3,000m steeplechase and placed 38th in 10:45.67, after she was previously ranked 45th in the event.
