Live scoring.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team makes its first appearance in Ohio State University's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate since 2017 when it travels to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend. The 54-hole event will consist of 18 holes each day at OSU Golf Club's Scarlet Course.
EMU will be competing against a field that includes four other Mid-American Conference members (Kent State Miami, Northern Illinois, and Ohio) as well as Abilene Christian, Colorado State, Creighton, Dayton, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas City, Maryland, North Dakota State, Purdue, South Dakota State, St. John's, and the host Buckeyes.
No active EMU student-athlete to have played a collegiate tournament on the fabled Scarlet Course.
All told, EMU had previously participated in the event 25 times (1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017).
During the 2010 campaign, the Eagles shot a 296 in the final round to capture the 41st Annual Robert Kepler Intercollegiate championship with a 54-hole total of 861 (287-288-286). EMU's two-day, three-round mark shattered the event's three-round record of 863 set by Ohio State during the 1998 tournament. The standard has since been moved to a 848 (284-278-286) by Georgia Tech during the 2015 event.
Ohio State has hosted the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate every year but four since the 1969 season. The event was not held in 2020 and 2013, it was cancelled because of weather in 2005 and was not held in 1997 because the Scarlet Course played host to the Big Ten Championship that spring.
The tournament is played on the challenging par 71, 7,455-yard Scarlet Course at The OSU Golf Club, voted the top collegiate golf course in November 2009 by GolfChannel.com. In 2007, the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate returned to the Scarlet Course after breaking from it the year before while the course was being redesigned under the tutelage of golf legend Jack Nicklaus.
The tournament is named for the late Robert Kepler, who served as Ohio State's golf coach from 1938 until 1965. Under Kepler, Ohio State built a golfing tradition which was enhanced by an NCAA team championship in 1945 and four NCAA individual championships. One of the later winners was Jack Nicklaus, now universally recognized as the greatest golfer the game has ever known.
Since its inception, the Kepler has been won by only a dozen schools – Colorado, Eastern Michigan, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Illinois, Kent State, Louisville, Miami (Ohio), Northwestern, Ohio State, UNLV and Xavier. The Buckeyes have hoisted the tournament champion trophy 25 times in the 51-year history of The Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, including six-consecutive victories from 1974-79 and nine-consecutive from 1981-1989. In-state rival Kent State ranks second with five team victories while fellow Big Ten schools, Illinois, Indiana, and Northwestern, are tied for third-place with four team crowns each.
