Volleyball Falls to Western Michigan

The Eagles are next in action at home against Ohio Friday, Oct. 25
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell in three sets to Western Michigan University Friday, Oct. 18, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
Anna Guard (Burlington, Ky./St. Henry District) finished with eight kills on the day to lead the Eagles offense. EMU got 12 digs from Hannah Blaney (Saline, Mich./Saline/Rhode Island) along with five blocks from Hatteras Welker (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut) to lead them defensively.
How it Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles fell behind early, losing a tough first set, 25-17. Eastern Michigan trailed by as many as eight points as Western Michigan grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that was knotted up nine times before the Broncos took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 2 | Eastern lost set two, 25-14, digging a 2-0 deficit in the match. Eastern Michigan trailed by as many as 11 points as Western grabbed the advantage for good at 3-2 in a set that was tied up two times before the Broncos took over the lead.
SET 3 | Eastern Michigan couldn't prolong the match and lost in set number three. The Eagles fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead before losing the set, 25-21.
Match Notes
» Taylor Smith (Pewamo, Mich. Pewamo-Westphalia) led Eastern Michigan in terms of assists with 14. The effort is the seventh time this season in which she recorded double-digit assists.
» Blaney tallied 12 digs in the loss against Western Michigan. Blaney now has double-digit digs in 20 matches in the 2024 season. Blaney has reached double figures in the stat in 58 of her 96 career matches (60.4%).
» As a team, Eastern Michigan led the digs battle over Western Michigan in digs, 42-41, it has out-dug its opponent 14 times this season, posting a 9-5 record when doing so .
Historical Notes
» Friday's contest marked the 98th all-time meeting between Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. After the result, the Eagles trail the series 74-24.
