Cross Country Readies for Live in Lou Cross Country Classic

The men's 8,000m will start at 9:30 a.m. and the women's 6,000m will begin at 10:15 a.m.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's cross country program is slated to race at the 22nd Annual Live in the Lou Cross Country Classic, Saturday, Sept. 30 against a 100-plus team field. The men's 8,000m will start first at 9:30 a.m. and the women will follow up, racing the 6,000m at 10:15 a.m. Both teams will race in the gold division at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
Both EMU programs had a productive outing last year at the Lou with the men taking home a fifth-place finish as former Eastern runner Baldvin Magnusson led the way with a 12th place finish individually, closely followed by Toby Gualter (13th), Marcus Kemp (Kichener, Ontario/St. Mary's Kitchener) (32nd), and Eddie Zuercher (47th).
The women placed 15th last year and were paced by senior Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya/Middle Tennessee State) (37th), Sofia Ivanko (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Matthew's College) (44th), and Esme Davies (Lake District, England/Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) (55th).
The last time out, EMU's women's squad placed third at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Open, posting 62 points while the men finished in fourth, putting up 79 points, respectively, Sept. 15. Davies excelled in the 6,000m race, placing third and marking her second straight top-five finish along with consecutive personal-best times, as she completed the course in 21:03.39.
Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hague), who concluded in 21:34.03, rounding out EMU's top 10 finishers. Senior Tabatha Walford (Northamptonshire, England/Bishop Stopford/Nevada) edged herself out a personal-best outing as she placed 25th in 22:09.17, besting her previous personal-best, 22:10.8.
The men would place fourth at the Mel Brodt. It was Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's Kitchener) who crossed the finish line first for the Eagles' men as the senior miler finished in eighth place in 25:26.22, marking his second top 10 finish of the season. Just a few spots behind Kemp ran Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix), who completed the 8000m race in 25:40.42, finishing in 12th.
Up next for the Eagles is a pair of meets taking place on the same day. One half of the men's and women's teams will head to College Station, Tex. for the Arturo Barrios Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M University. The remaining EMU harriers will make a shorter trip to Bowing Green, Ohio, for the second time in the 2023 campaign, for the Falcon Invitational, hosted by Bowling Green State University, Oct. 13. Race details will be announced at a later date.
