YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer program returns to the road for a pair of matches in New England where the Eagles will take on Dartmouth College Friday, Aug. 25, in Hanover, N.H., before closing the trip with a match Sunday, Aug. 27, at Northeastern University in Brookline, Mass. The Eagles (0-1-1) and Big Green (0-0-0) are set for a 5 p.m. kick with the match being streamed live on ESPN+ while EMU will face the Huskies (1-1-0) in a 1 p.m. start on Flo FC.
ON THE AIR: Both matches are set to be streamed this week. First, Matt Coresetti will have the call live on ESPN+ as the Eagles and Big Green meet in a 5 p.m. start Friday afternoon. The match Sunday will be streamed live on Flo FC (subscription needed) at 1 p.m. with Adam Giardino and Alex Vispoli on the call. Live statistics will be available for both matches as well.
QUICK KICKS:
» Eastern is coming off an opening weekend in which it posted an 0-1-1 record, including a 2-2 home draw with St. Bonaventure and a 1-0 loss at Oakland.
» Following the 2-2 draw with the Bonnies, the Eagles moved to 12-8-9 all-time in their first match of the season and 13-9-7 in their home opener. Eastern fell to 11-13-5 in their road opener following the setback at Oakland.
» Eastern Michigan is now 248-235-65 all-time and stands 142-109-32 in Mid-American Conference play. With two victories this year, the Eagles will record the 250th win in program history.
» Head Coach Scott Hall is currently in his 25th season at the helm of the program and holds an all-time record of 209-204-62 (131-105-30 MAC) during his time in Ypsilanti.
» Scott Hall is in elite company as the Eagles' gaffer is one of just 44 active head coaches embarking on their 25th or higher season with an NCAA Division I women's program in 2023, one of only 13 of which has done so at the same school. Hall will also become the sixth head coach of any sport in EMU history to guide the same program for 25 or more years.
» Seven newcomers saw their first collegiate action in the first two matches of the year, including freshmen Ella Holland (redshirt), Kate Robinson, and Cameryn Susey, all of whom earned their first collegiate starts.
» Four other freshmen logged their first collegiate action, including Maddi Cowburn, Olivia Sipsock, Rosalie Takacsy, and Sarah Van Euwen.
» In the match at Oakland (Aug. 20), junior Chloe Rajewski saw her first action in nearly one year. Her last time playing came Sept. 4, 2022, at home against Dartmouth.
» Robinson and Meagan Lukowski scored the goals against the Bonnies, marking the fifth in Lukowski's career and the first for the rookie Robinson.
TWO MORE: Eastern sports an all-time record of 248-235-65, leaving the Eagles just two wins shy of reaching the 250-victory milestone. The last time the Eagles recorded a milestone victory came Sept. 21, 2018, when their 2-0 home win over Kent State marked the 225th program win.
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH: The match with Dartmouth will serve as the Big Green's season-opening contest after they played exhibitions at home against Saint Rose (Aug. 18) and Ottawa (Aug. 21). Last year, DC posted an 8-7-2 overall record and were 1-5-1 in Ivy League play, including three, one-goal losses in its final three games. The Big Green return five of their top six point scorers, but will have to replace their top contributor in Allie Winstanley, who led the way with 11 goals and three assists for 25 points. Aleena Seals is the top returning scorer with 11 points on five goals and one helper. DC also will need to replace their starting keeper, Charlotte Cyr, who started all 17 matches last year and held opponents to 1.37 goals against per game.
IN THE SERIES WITH THE BIG GREEN: The match Friday will mark the second all-time meeting in the series with both sides playing to a 1-1 draw last year, Sept. 4, 2022, at the Legacy Center in Brighton, Mich.
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN: The Huskies, members of the Coastal Athletic Association (formerly the Colonial Athletic Association) head into the week with a 1-1-0 record after dropping a 2-0 decision at Xavier before grabbing a 3-1 road victory at Holy Cross. Avery LeVangie leads the team in scoring with four points on two goals, which came on just two shots, while Sofie Fox has netted the other goal this year. Defensively, Holland Stam has played both matches in goal, allowing 1.50 goals per game while making seven saves.
IN THE SERIES WITH THE HUSKIES: Sunday's match will mark the first in the all-time series.
STILL NEW TO NEW ENGLAND: This week's matches will mark just the second trip to New England for the Eagle program and their first since the 2018 campaign. On the initial trip, the Eagles grabbed a 1-0 victory at UConn, Sept. 14, 2018, before dropping a 6-1 decision at UMass, Sept. 16, 2018.
ANOTHER STICKER: If the Eastern program had a mobile home with one of the maps of the United States on the side, it would enter the weekend with 25 states filled in and exit with 26 as the match at Dartmouth will mark the first in the state of New Hampshire for the Eagles. The states Eastern has played at least one match since its first season in 1995 include: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawai'i, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
LOOKING BACK - OPENING WEEKEND: The Eagles posted an 0-1-1 record in their opening weekend of play, tallying a 2-2 draw with the visiting Bonnies of St. Bonaventure, Aug. 17, before falling on the road at Oakland, 1-0, to the Golden Grizzlies.
» The opening match saw both teams battle the elements as rain poured throughout the first half. The Bonnies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 13' and held off the Eagles for a one-goal cushion at the break. Following halftime, however, the Eagles took flight with both Kate Robinson and Meagan Lukowski netting goals in the 64' and 71', respectively, to stake Eastern to a 2-1 lead. That lead was short-lived as SBU pulled even six minutes later to knot things at two in the 77'. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way.
» At Oakland, the hosts jumped to an early lead with a goal in the 5'. The Eagles looked to respond and, just three minutes later, saw a Golden Grizzly player shown a straight red card for taking Maddie O'Farrell down from behind as she broke in for a 1v1 attack on goal. Despite the man advantage on the sweltering day, the Eagles were unable to capitalize on its 15-4 advantage in shots and fell for the first time in 2023, 1-0.
IN OPENERS - SEASON: With the 2-2 draw against visiting St. Bonaventure, Aug. 17, the Eagles moved to 12-8-9 all-time in their first match of the season. The result also made it two years in a row in which the opener ended in a 2-2 tie. Additionally, Eastern is now 6-4-6 when its first match of the season is played at home.
IN OPENERS - HOME: The Eagles moved to 13-9-7 all-time in their home opener following the 2-2 draw with the Bonnies, Aug. 17. The tie kept a strong streak alive as the Eagles have lost just once in their last 11 home openers, holding a record of 5-1-5 in those contests.
IN OPENERS - AWAY: Eastern's 1-0 loss to the Golden Grizzlies saw the program fall to 11-13-5 in its road opener. The Eagles won their road opener last year, 4-0, at Illinois State, Aug. 21, 2022.
ACCOUNT OPENED: Kate Robinson made an immediate impact in her debut as the rookie found the back of the net in the 64' to open her collegiate scoring account. She tallied her goal by collecting a deflected ball at the top of the box, moved to her right, and fired the ball into the net to make it 1-1 in the match. With the goal, Robinson is the 92nd different player to score a goal for Eastern under Scott Hall, who took over at the start of the 1999 season.
LOGGING TIME: Through the first two matches of the season, seven newcomers have logged minutes for the Eagles, all of whom played their first collegiate minutes. The debuting Eagles include Maddi Cowburn, Ella Holland, Kate Robinson, Olivia Sipsock, Cameryn Susey, Rosalie Takacsy, and Sarah Van Euwen. Additionally, Holland (twice), Robinson, and Susey each logged their first collegiate starts.
FOLLOW ALONG: You can follow the Eagles on your favorite social media platforms, including Twitter (@EMUSoccer), Instagram (@EMUSoccer), and Facebook (Eastern Michigan Soccer).
UP NEXT: Two more road matches await the Eagles next week, including an intrastate showdown with Michigan State University, the No. 17-ranked team in the nation. The week opens in East Lansing, Mich., with the Eagles and Spartans meeting at 7:30 p.m. live on Big Ten Network+ (streaming), Thursday, Aug. 31. Eastern then heads south to the Bluegrass State to take on the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky University Sunday, Sept. 3. The match, which will be streamed live on ESPN+, will begin at 1 p.m. in Richmond, Ky.
