Iceland, Canada set to hold national championship competitions this weekend
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Four current and former Eastern Michigan University track and field student-athletes are set to compete for national titles at their respective national championships that will be conducted in Canada and Iceland. Three Eagles are scheduled to compete at the Bell Canadian Track & Field Championships in the Township of Langley, British Columbia, July 27-30, while one EMU great is set to race at the Iceland Athletics Championships Sunday, July 30, in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Recent graduate Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland/Hull University), a holder of several national records from 1,500m to 5,000m in Iceland, will race for a national crown in the 5,000m run. Magnusson, who will race Sunday at 2:30 p.m. GMT (10:30 a.m. ET), raced to national records in the 1,500m run (3:40.36) at the Raleigh Relays, March 23, before lowering the standard in the 3,000m run, July 1, in Watford, England, with his time of 7:49.68. Last year (April 14, 2022), Magnusson set the Icelandic national record in the 5,000m run when he crossed the finish line in 13:32.47 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.
The Canadian Championships will get underway Thursday, July 27, with incoming freshman Paige Marchant (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) set to compete in the qualifying round of the U20 1,500m run, which starts at 4:20 p.m. PT (7:20 p.m. ET). Should she advance, the semifinals will be raced Friday (5:39 p.m. PT/8:39 p.m. ET) and the final Saturday (6:20 p.m. PT/9:20 p.m. ET). Marchant also will be racing in the 800m run in the U20 division with the qualifiers opening Friday at 3:10 p.m. PT (6:10 p.m. ET) with the semifinals (Saturday, 3:05 p.m. PT/6:05 p.m. ET) and finals (Sunday, 11:16 a.m. PT/2:16 p.m. ET) to follow.
On the men's side, Callum Robinson (Goderich, Ontario/St. Anne's Catholic Secondary/Simon Fraser) returns to the track and will race in the 200m dash with qualifiers opening Saturday at 4:05 p.m. PT (7:05 p.m. ET). Robinson, who captured gold at the 2023 NACAC Track & Field Championships July 23 when he ran a personal-best 20.52, would race in the semifinal (10:30 a.m. PT/1:38 p.m. ET) and final (7:20 p.m. PT/10:20 p.m. ET) Sunday. In the field, newcomer Jake McEachern (Lloydminster, Alberta) will compete in the U20 division of both the discus and hammer throws. McEachern will first contest the discus Thursday at 5 p.m. PT (8 p.m. ET) before competing in the hammer Friday at 12:50 p.m. PT (3:50 p.m. ET).
Robinson was not the only runner with ties to Eastern to compete in July as Brittni Mason continued to impress on the international stage at the 2023 Para World Championships in Paris, France. Competing in the T47 division, Mason opened the 200m competition by winning her heat in a then-season-best time of 25.72. She came back to the track later in the day and race to victory in the final, winning her first individual world championship in 25.36.
