SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University rowing team will close its 2023 season with a trip to the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, set for Friday, May 12, on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Because the Mid-American Conference does not sponsor varsity rowing, Eastern competes as an affiliate member within the CAA.
ON THE SCHEDULE: The Eagles' First and Second Varsity Eight boats, along with the First Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight boats, will race at the championships. The Third Varsity Eight will race at 10:30 a.m., with the First Varsity Four to follow at 10:40. The Second Varsity Eight will hit the water at 10:50 a.m., with the First Varsity Eight boat to follow at 11 a.m.
A CHANCE FOR HISTORY: Eastern has competed as a member of the CAA since the beginning of the 2012-13 season, and is still in search of its first league title. The Eagles have finished as high as third on three different occasions, including at the 2022 installment of the event. EMU also finished third in 2016 and 2019, respectively.
LAST YEAR AT THE CAA CHAMPIONSHIP: Northeastern University notched its eighth consecutive league title, but the Eastern Michigan rowers tied their all-time best finish with a third place showing at the event, which took place at the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J.
The Third Varsity Eight boat took fifth in the first race of the championships, crossing the finish line in 7:26.968. EMU's Varsity Four crew also notched fifth with a time of 7:46.621 in a tight race. Eastern then placed fourth in the Second Varsity Eight race, holding off UC San Diego and finishing in 7:00.084.
The highlight of the day was the Green and White's First Varsity Eight boat, which fought hard the entire 2,000 meters for third, helping the team take third overall to tie for the highest finish in program history. For their efforts, former Eagle Emma Boersen and then-sophomore Chloe Hinojosa (Kewanee, Ill.-Kewanee) were named to the All-CAA team.
LAST TIME OUT: EMU raced the University of Dayton on Ford Lake Saturday, April 29. The Second Varsity Four B boat claimed the first victory of the day for the Eagles, finishing less than a second ahead of Dayton at 8:12.9. EMU's Second Varsity Eight boat competed next, taking first place in the 2V8 race at 7:11.95.
The Eagles' First Varsity Four and Varsity Eight squads took second in their races, crossing the finish line with 8:07.0 and 6:52.4 times, respectively.
Eastern Michigan's Third Varsity Four A boat recorded the final win of the afternoon with a 8:31.1, first-place finish over both of Dayton's 3V4 squads. The Green and White's Third Varsity Four B group placed third at 9:33.4.
