YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team sent its lone senior, Julie Lindsey (Louisville, Ky.-Eastern-Central Michigan), out on a high note as the team went on a scoring frenzy in a 17-12 Mid-American Conference home victory over the Titans of the University of Detroit Mercy, Saturday, April 29, on Scicluna Field.
The Eagles (2-14, 1-7 MAC) secured their first-ever conference victory in program history, while the Titans (3-11, 2-6 MAC) earned their sixth MAC setback of the year.
How It Happened
The host Eagles opened things up with a 3-2 lead over the visiting Titans early in the first quarter. Mackenzie Blackwell (North Beach, Md.-Northern) put goals on the board first as Avery Schwab (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin-Scioto) found a cutting Blackwell for the first goal of the game at the 12:05 mark of the opening stanza. Then, both Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md.-Patuxent) and Haley Hodak (Severn, Md.-Old Mill) each found the back of the net after surrendering two Titans goals to go up by one after the first 15 minutes of play.
Skylar Hilmer (San Diego, Calif.-Patrick Henry) chimed in on the action, connecting on a pass from Hodak at the 10:57 mark of the second period to extend the Eagles lead to two before Detroit Mercy bumped the lead back down to one just two minutes later. The rest of the period saw the Eagles on the bad end of the back-and-forth game as the Titans grabbed an 8-6 advantage going into halftime.
Down by two, the Green and White opened the third period with a made shot from Ab. Alderman, her third of the day, who scored on a dime from Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md.-St. Mary's Ryken College). Then, with the Titans down a player, Schwab took advantage of a pass from Edie Prager (Lake Oswego, Ore.-Lake Oswego) to knot the score at eight with 12:46 remaining in the third period. The Eagles would then see three back-to-back goals to take back the advantage and force a UDM timeout. Ab. Alderman continued the scoring frenzy with her fifth and final of the game to give the Eagles their 12th goal of the game before her twin sister Amber Alderman (Lusby, Md.-Patuxent) secured the teams 13th off a free-position attempt to head into the final quarter up, 13-10.
The opening minutes of the fourth saw the Eagles surrender another goal before going on another 3-0 back-to-back run to extend the lead to five over the Titans. To top it off, Blackwell scored her 39th team-leading goal to give the Green and White 17, the most goals scored by EMU in a single game. In the Titans defense, UDM fought till the final minute, squeezing in one more goal with 17 seconds left in the game to ultimately fall, 17-12, for EMU's first-ever conference victory in program history.
Game Notes
» With the victory, the Eagles recorded their first win in Mid-American Conference play as well as their first home conference victory.
» As a team, the Eagles scored a program-record 17 goals on the day, surpassing the 15 scored at Youngstown State, April 8. The 17 goals also stand as the most scored in a winning effort for the Eagles, bettering the 12 scored in their defeat of Delaware State, March 7.
» In the third quarter, the Eagles scored the first six goals of the stanza to post the second-longest scoring run in program history. The previous best came against Delaware State with seven.
» The seven goals Eastern scored in the third quarter stand as the most in a single stanza in program history, surpassing the six EMU scored in the first quarter against Delaware State.
» Along with the goals scored, Eastern set program records for assists (10) and points (27). The 10 helpers bettered the seven tallied twice before (at Xavier, March 12, and at Youngstown State, April 8) while the 27 points bettered the previous mark of 22 points (15g-7a) at YSU.
» The 23 draw controls won by the Eagles also is a single-game record, bettering the 21 they recorded at Butler, March 26.
» Ab. Alderman had a career day as the rookie tallied five goals, which ties for the second-most goals in game at EMU, just one off Blackwell's six scored against Central Michigan, April 5. The five goals marked just the second time she scored multiple goals in a game this year after scoring two at Winthrop, March 3.
» With her five goals, Ab. Alderman joined her sister in recording a hat trick this year after Am. Alderman accomplished the feat with three goals at Youngstown State, April 8.
» Am. Alderman was credited with the game-winning goal as she found the netting with 1:50 remaining in the third quarter to give EMU its 13th goal of the game. She joins Hilmer as the only players to score a game-winning goal for the Eagles this year after Hilmer tallied the winner against Delaware State, March 7.
» Blackwell continued to shine as she netted four goals to record her seventh hat trick of the year. She also tallied at least two goals in 12 of the 16 games she played for Eastern in 2023.
» Blackwell recorded nine draw controls on the day, the third-most in a single game for the Eagles behind the 10 she recorded twice earlier this year. With 83 total draws won, Blackwell finished as the top freshman in the category by 11.
» Hilmer recorded three goals and two assists for five points in the game with the three goals standing as her second career hat trick after scoring three in EMU's first win over Delaware State. Her five points also stand as the fifth-most in a single game at Eastern.
» With two assists, Hilmer tripled her career output as she entered the game with one to her credit. Her first multiple-assist game comes after recording her first career assist in the game with Kent State, April 12.
» Prager recorded a hat trick of assists as she finished the game with three helpers. Her assist total stands as the second-most in a single game behind Schawb's four at Xavier, March 12. The assist total also is the most in a home game for the Eagles, surpassing two helpers that were recorded three times.
» Hodak entered the game with one goal (vs. Niagara, Feb. 16) and one assist (at Xavier, March 12), before recording her first multiple-point game against the Titans. Hodak tied career highs in both goals scored and assists on the day.
» Hannah Bargeron (Farmington, Utah-Viewmont-Westmister (UT) College) came into the game late in the second quarter before recording six saves and allowing just four goals the rest of the way to earn her victory with the Eagles. Bargeron, who recorded one ground ball and one caused turnover, lowered her fewest goals allowed total for the season after Niagara scored six on her in the first game of the season.
