Post Game Press Conference
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Behind a balanced scoring attack that saw seven different players score at least one goal, the Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team secured its first program win Tuesday, March 7, as the Eagles claimed a 12-7 victory over visiting Delaware State University at Scicluna Field. The Eagles (1-2) used a seven-goal run early in the game to build an 8-1 lead before holding off a late charge from the Hornets (2-3) for the win.
How It Happened
The Eagles claimed their first lead in program history as Avery Schwab (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Scioto) opened the scoring just over 90 seconds into the game before the Hornets tied things up at 1-1 with 11:13 remaining in the first. From there, the Eagle offense went on a big run as Eastern scored the next seven goals in a row to take an 8-1 advantage midway through the second. Skylar Hilmer (San Diego, Calif.-Patrick Henry) opened and closed the run as she tallied her first of the day at 9:37 in the first quarter before adding her second with 8:41 remaining in the half. Hilmer, who's second goal stands as the game-winner for the Eagles, was joined in the scoring streak with two more goals from Schwab, who scored back-to-back goals to record the first hat trick in program history, and single scores from Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md.-Patuxent), Tracy Grollman (Annapolis, Md.-Annapolis Area Christian School), and Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md.-St. Mary's Ryken College) each scored once.
After taking an 8-2 lead into halftime, the Eagles surrendered three goals to the Hornets before Hilmer netted her third goal with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter, sending the game to its final quarter of play with a 9-5 lead. The goal from Hilmer made her the second Eagle to record a hat trick in the game and in program history.
The Hornets struck early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to three (9-6), but Eastern answered right back as Mackenzie Blackwell (North Beach, Md.-Northern) scored 25 seconds later on an assist from Kyleigh Dill (Dover, Del.-Dover), who recorded her first collegiate point, to start a three-goal run that put the game away. On the run, Blackwell's goal was followed by Sydney Lawrence (Wylie, Texas-Plano Senior-Oregon) adding her name to the ledger before Blackwell ended the scoring for Eastern with her second of the day. The Hornets added one more score with 4:38 remaining in the game to close the scoring and were thwarted on a pair of attempts after with Giuliana Ditsky (Wyomissing, Pa.-Berks Catholic) shutting the door with two more of her single-game-tying record 10 saves.
