Blackwell notches first ever four-goal game
CINCINNATI, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team fought valiantly, but ultimately fell short to fellow first-year program Xavier University, 11-10, Sunday, March 12, at Corcoran Field in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The visiting Green and White offense had a great showing as five different Eagles found themselves on the scoring sheet with two earning hat tricks. Freshman Mackenzie Blackwell (North Beach, Md.-Northern) led the way as she collected four points off four goals (4-of-14), one groundball, one caused turnover and three draw controls, while Sydney Lawrence (Wylie, Texas-Plano Senior-Oregon) followed with three points off three goals (3-of-11), two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and four draw controls.
How It Happened
The Eagles, who prior to the match came off their first program win, a 12-7 home victory over Delware State, March 7, were looking for their first consecutive stretch of wins, but fell short in the final minutes of play.
The Xavier Musketeers put numbers on the board first, as Riley Halloran found the back of the net 22 seconds into the first quarter for her 16th season goal. Halloran stretched the Xavier lead to two shortly after, before Blackwell responded with her first goal of the game, her sixth of the season, to cut the Xavier lead in half with over 11 minutes left in the opening stanza. Almost a minute later, Lawrence knotted the score with her fourth season goal before surrendering a Musketeer free position attempt which ultimately resulted in Xavier's third notch of the game, putting XU up 3-2 with 10 minutes on the clock. Both teams netted a final goal in the remaining 10 minutes of play as Blackwell earned her second of the day at 7:03, a man-up goal.
The second quarter saw the Musketeers extend their lead to two with a quick shot in the first 30 seconds to set the score 5-3. Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md.-Patuxent) responded with her fifth season goal with help from Avery Schwab (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Scioto) before Blackwell tied the score up for the second time today, putting it at 5-5 with 4:29 minutes left in the half. From there, the Musketeers ended the second with a goal before opening the third with yet another to go up 7-5. It was once again Blackwell and Lawrence who tallied two more for the Eagles bringing the game to 7-7.
A hard-fought third quarter saw Eastern score five of its 10 total goals as the team headed into the final stanza up by two for its first lead over Xavier. Despite a strong defensive showing earlier in the game, the Eagles surrendered three unanswered goals in the final quarter, dropping its fourth contest of the season by a 11-10 decision.
