LEXINGTON, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will compete in two road meets this weekend. First the Eagles will take on No.10 University of Kentucky, Friday, Feb.10 at 7 p.m. before returning to the Mitten to compete against conference rival Western Michigan University, Sunday, Feb.10 at 1 p.m. in Kalamazoo, Mich.
FOLLOWING THE MEET: Fans can follow both meets through live results. EMU's meet against Kentucky will be broadcast on SECN+ while the team's competition against Western Michigan will air on ESPN+. Links can be found on the EMU gymnastics schedule page located on EMUEagles.com.
MEET IN MOUNT PLEASANT: Eastern Michigan dropped its most recent meet 196.250-192.050 to the Central Michigan University Chippewas in Mount Pleasant, Mich., Feb. 3. Raisa Boris highlighted competition for the Eagles, posting three scores of 9.800 or better to boost the team score. Ella Chemotti gave another impressive performance on beam, earning a 9.850 for second place overall.
BEAM QUEEN: Ella Chemotti's average beam score of 9.870, and high of 9.925, stand alone atop the conference's beam rankings for the third straight week. The sophomores' scores are good for 36th in the nation. Last season, Chemotti spent three weeks leading the conference on the apparatus and concluded the team's 2022 campaign there with an NQS of 9.875.
RAI TIES HIGH: Raisa Boris shined bright against the Chippewas for the Eagles, Feb. 3. The junior tallied a 38.850 in all-around as she recorded three scores of 9.800 or better for the Eagles. Boris posted a 9.850 on both floor and bars for third place overall. The Minnesota native's 9.850 floor tied for her career best on the apparatus, a mark she had already equalled once this season against Ball State, Jan.22. She earned another third place finish on beam with a 9.800.
FOUR FOR FIVE: Ella Chemotti has posted first place finishes on beam in four of Eastern Michigan's five meets so far this season. At the Arizona State Triangular, Jan. 13, the sophomore took the top spot on the apparatus with a 9.850 in front of ASU standouts Gracie Reeves and Emily White who tied for second at 9.825. The following week at the Iowa State Triangular, Jan. 20, Chemotti recorded a season high 9.925 beam score to finish first once again. Against Ball State Jan. 22, Chemotti's 9.825 performance on beam earned her a tie for first overall in the event. Her effort at the West Virginia Quad, Jan. 29 earned Chemotti another top score of 9.900 on beam, her second score of 9.900 or better this season and the sixth in her career. Chemotti's 9.850 beam score at Central Michigan, Feb. 3, was good for second place behind CMU's Hannah Demers, who earned the top spot a 9.950.
TOP TENNER: Raisa Boris is ranked inside the conference's top ten event performers after the fifth week of competition. Boris climbed to sixth overall on bars from the eighth place position last week with an average score of 9.825. The junior's average all-around score of 38.869 remains ranked at sixth for the third straight week.
FIRST YEAR PHENOM: Kyrie Lowe appeared in her fifth straight meet for the Eagles, Feb. 3, as part of the bars and beam lineups. The freshman posted an impressive 9.800 for the second time this season on bars to match her career high and boost the Eagles' team score. She also recorded a 9.350 in her collegiate debut on beam. The week prior, Lowe made her first appearance on floor at the West Virginia Quad, Jan. 29 where she earned a 9.500.
ALL-AROUND ELLA: Ella Chemotti made her Eastern Michigan all-around debut against the Chippewas, Feb. 3. In 15 previous meets, the sophomore appeared mainly as part of the Eagles' vault, bars, and beam lineups. At Central Michigan, Chemotti tallied a 38.725 across all four events, highlighted by a 9.850 second place finish on beam. She also posted 9.600 scores on vault and bars, along with a 9.675 on floor.
KEY EAGLE: Awarded after every contest, the Eastern Michigan gymnastics coaching staff choose one gymnast to anoint as that meet's Key Eagle. Ella Chemotti earned this week's honor for her performance at Central Michigan, Feb. 3. The sophomore made her all-around debut for the Eagles, tallying a 38.725 across all four events. Chemotti was the team's highest event finish as she posted 9.850 on beam for second place overall.
LAST TIME VS. KENTUCKY: Eastern Michigan has faced Kentucky just once prior in program history. The Wildcats defeated the Eagles in their 2017 season opener, 195.075-192.050, at home inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center, Jan. 6. Former Eagle Kendall Valentin earned the sole first place finish of the night for Eastern with a 9.825 on bars. Catie Conrad and Natalie Gervais also posted 9.800s on bars. Eastern Michigan paced Kentucky on bars, outscoring the visitors 48.875-48.850.
LAST TIME VS. WESTERN MICHIGAN: The Eagles faced the Broncos twice last season, both ending in victories for WMU. Eastern dropped its most recent contest against Western,195.750-190.175, at the Bowling Green Triangular, Feb. 26, 2022. Raisa Boris posted a then career-best 39.075 all-around score at the meet with a first place finish on bars, 9.825. Boris also scored a 9.850 for second on beam. Additonally, Anna Grace McCullough tallied a then personal high on floor with a 9.825.
ALL TIME VS. WMU: Eastern Michigan leads the series 19-14 against Western Michigan since 2003. The Eagles owned a six meet winning streak between 2008 and 2010. More recently, the Green and White defeated the Broncos five straight times from 2016 to 2019. In those victories, EMU posted a team score of 195.375 or better in three of those meets.
ON THE HORIZON: Eastern Michigan will compete in its final road meet of the season against conference foe Northern Illinois University, Feb. 17, in Dekalb, Ill. Meet time is slated for 7 p.m. CT / 8 p.m. ET.
