Magnusson’s School Record Paces Track & Field’s Strong Showings

2/4/2023 8:05:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

Gazaway runs the No. 8 time in the women’s 60m hurdles as well

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Members of the Eastern Michigan University men's and women's track and field programs competed in a pair of meets over the weekend with the Eagles combining to bring 13 event titles and 33 total personal best marks back home. A small contingent took part in the 2023 Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind., while the majority of Eagles competed in the 2023 Grand Valley State University Snowdown Showdown in Allendale, Mich.

How it Happened
Competition got underway Friday, Feb. 3, at the Snowdown Showdown in Allendale, Mich., where the Eagles won 12 events and posted 23 of the team's 33 personal-best marks on the weekend. Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) led the way for the women as she not only the won the 200m dash (PR 24.63) for the second time this year, she also raced to a time of 8.49 in the 60m hurdles to place third in the meet while recording the No. 8 time in program history. She previously ran 8.51 earlier this season to break into the top 10 at No. 10.

Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) won the 60m dash in her season debut in the event, taking gold in 7.55, while Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla.-The-Out-of-Door Academy) captured the win in the 400m dash at 55.43, a personal-best time and the fastest of the year for EMU. In the field, Nyla Joseph-Guevara (Coral Springs, Fla.-Fort Lauderdale) and Natalie Buratczuck (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) won titles in the triple jump and high jump, respectively.

On the men's side, Yvan Lopes Ribeiro (Nice, France-Lycée Honoré d'Estiennes d'Orves-American International) continued his strong showings as he swept the titles in the 60m hurdles (7.93) and the long jump (7.14m/23-05.25) for the third time this year. The win in the long jump also kept him undefeated in the event after winning his fourth crown of the season.

Eric Haddock Jr. (Raleigh, N.C.-Southeast Raleigh-Appalachian State), who was second in the long jump behind Lopes Ribeiro, won the triple jump title for the first time this year as he bounced his way to first place with a mark of 13.98m (45-10.50). Back on the track, Kyle Martin (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ann Arbor Huron) won the 200m dash with distance runners Grant Sweningson (North Tustin, Calif.-Foothills) and Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) winning the mile and 3,000m run, respectively.

On Saturday, Feb. 4, the action moved to South Bend, Ind., and the 2023 Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame where one school record, 10 personal bests, and one victory were recorded. Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) continued his stellar senior season as he raced to runner-up honors in the Meyo Mile invitational section, finishing in 3:57.13 to not only record a personal-best time but also lower the school record that was set 18 years earlier when Paul McMullen ran 357.34 in 1995. Magnusson, who's previous best was 3:58.08, joins McMullen as the only two Eastern men to run under 3:58 in the event.

The non-invitational portion of the mile saw Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) capture Eastern's lone win in South Bend as he ran a personal-best 4:04.00 to capture the victory while lowering his time by more than two seconds.

Meet Notes
Meyo Invitational (Notre Dame)
» The Eagles captured one event win with Gualter capturing the non-invitational portion of the mile run. He ran 4:04.00 to capture the title while lowering his personal-best time by over two seconds.
» Magnusson continued his stellar season as he was second in the invitational section of the mile – The Meyo Mile – as he ran an EMU record 3:57.12 to finish second. His mark is a personal best, but won't be an Icelandic record like his 3:59.60 at the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 14, because he ran the Meyo Mile on an oversized track.
» Magnusson's time of 3:57.12 in the Meyo Mile broke an 18-year-old school record. Paul Mcullen ran the previous record of 3:57.34 in 1995. Additionally, Magnusson's time makes him just the second EMU man to run the indoor mile under 3:58.
Snowdown Showdown (GVSU)
» The Eagles combined to win 12 events, including seven by the men and five by the women.
» Gazaway raced to a time of 8.49 in the final of the 60m hurdles, which lowered her personal-best time by 0.02 seconds. It also moved her up to No. 8 all-time in EMU history after she ran the No. 10 time of 8.51 earlier this year. Gazaway also won the 200m dash (24.63) for the second time this year and finished in the top 3 for the third time in three races in the event this year.
» Lopes Ribeiro won two events on the day for the men, taking the 60m hurdles in 7.93 and the long jump with a leap of 7.14m (23-05.25). The wins marked his third sweep of the two events in the same event for the third time this season and kept him undefeated with his fourth long jump crown.
» Walkes ran 55.43 to win the 400m, which stands as the fastest time of her career and the fastest time of any EMU 400m runner this season.
» Haddock Jr., took the title in the triple jump (13.98m/45-10.50) to give the Eagles a sweep of the men's horizontal jumps. The win is Haddock Jr.'s first of the year in the event.
