YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team will compete in the Mid-American Conference Championships in Oxford, Ohio. The four day championships will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 22, and conclude on Saturday, Feb. 25.
The Eagles placed fifth at the MAC Championship last season with 354 points as the team captured three silver and two bronze medals. Akron will look to defend its championship.
Junior Camryn Hughes (London, Ontario-Sir Frederick Banting Secondary) placed third last season on the 1-meter board with 290.65 points. She is the only Eagle returner that earned a top three finish last season at the championship.
Senior Keira Veltigian (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford), who was fifth on the 1-meter board with 275.45 points, and sophomore Rebekah Knapp (Mesa, Ariz.-Skyline), who placed eighth (256.80), give the Eagles plenty of depth on the boards.
Several other Eagles return after placing in the top ten at the MAC Championship last season led by senior Sav Mouat (Tecumseh, Ontario-All Saints) who was fifth in the 1,650 freestyle (16:56.95).
Junior Katie Shoen (Owego, N.Y. - Owego Free Academy) placed eighth in the 50 freestyle (23.35), sophomore Abby Szadorski (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego East) was eighth in the 400 IM (4:24.86) while senior Laine Bell (Atlanta, Ga.-Druid Hills-Northern Arizona) was ninth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.65.
LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles closed out the dual meet portion of the season with a loss at the University at Buffalo back on Jan. 21.
The Eagles won four events with senior Carlin Hudson (Chattanooga, Tenn.-Chattanooga School for the Arts & Science) winning both the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 5:05.20 and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.75.
Shoen took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.86 while freshman Alexandra Kudo (Guelph, Ontario-John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute) won the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:12.25.
