Swim and Dive Finishes Sixth at MAC Championships

The Eagles tallied 12 top-10 program finishes at the event

OXFORD, Ohio. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team concluded its four-day stint at the Mid-American Conference Championships today, Feb. 25, finishing sixth place overall with a final team tally of 302. The meet was held in Oxford, Ohio, on the campus of Miami University.
Eastern Michigan outperformed both the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University in their efforts.
How it Happened
Wednesday
The competition got underway Wednesday with the 200 medley relay. Eastern Michigan finished sixth in the event with a time of 1:41.41. The place equals the team's finish from a season ago. The first evening of competition concluded with the 800 free relay, where Eastern Michigan placed fifth with a time of 7:18.23.
Thursday
Day two of the action from Oxford featured a morning set of preliminary rounds followed by championship races in the evening. In the 500 freestyle prelims, it was Kiersten Russell (Clinton, Mich.-Saline) who paced the Eagles, finishing in 4:52.27. Senior Carlin Hudson (Chattanooga, Tenn.-Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences) made an impressive run of her own in the 200 prelims, finishing in 2:02.25, the eighth-best time in program history. Yet another all-time mark was hit in the 50 prelims when Katie Shoen (Owego, N.Y.-Owego Free Academy) finished in 22.99 seconds, the sixth-best time in EMU history. Ciara Wheeler (Johnston, Iowa-Johnston) rounded out the impressive preliminary performances with a sixth-place, 257.79 showing in the 1 meter dive.
In the evening finals, it was Ali Kudo (Guelph, Ontario-John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute) that gave Eastern's best performance of the night. She finished second overall in the 500 freestyle in a time of just 4:48.90, the sixth-best mark in program history. The finish marked incredible improvement for Eastern from a season ago, where it finished ninth overall in the event. The Eagles got another top-10 performance from Hudson in the 200 individual medley finals. She used a pace of 2:00.83 to earn the result, bettering her 12th-place MAC Championship finish from a season ago (2:03.93). The night concluded with a eighth-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay final, and a fourth-place mark in the 1-meter dive by Wheeler, who improved upon her prelim score in outstanding fashion (270.36).
Friday
Friday's preliminary rounds were highlighted by Hudson, who finished second in the 200 yard freestyle with a mark of 1:47.63, the fifth-best time in EMU laurels. Abby Szadorski (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego East) added a top-10 prelim finish in the 400 yard individual medley with a split of 4:25.23. Russell was ninth in the 100 yard backstroke prelims, finishing with a time of 54.94.
In the 100 yard butterfly final, Eastern saw an impressive performance from Olivia Clarino (Toronto, Ontario-Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute). She finished 15th overall with a time of 55.44 seconds, good for the 10th overall mark in program history. Hudson came up big yet again, this time in the 200 yard freestyle, where she finished in 1:47.70, the sixth-best mark in school history. Following suit, Russell placed ninth in the 100 backstroke final, putting forth the seventh-best mark in school history, a 54.57 second showing.
Saturday
Saturday featured the final day of competition. Again, the morning was highlighted by preliminary runnings. The 200 backstroke saw Russell finish with what is now the eighth-best program mark. When she completed the race, it was good for seventh, however she went on to better her time in the final, thus changing the record book further.
The Green and White put together three top-10 finishes in separate finals tonight. Russell's 1:58.19 in the 200 backstroke final was not only a personal-best mark, but goes as the No. 4 overall time in EMU program history. Meanwhile, Camryn Hughes (London, Ontario-Sir Frederick Banting Secondary) finished sixth in the 3-meter dive, with a score of 276.50. Kudo rounded out the group of top-10 finishers with a 16:56.88 in the 1650 freestyle event, just missing out on a top-10 program mark.
