WHAT A WEEKEND: The Eagles competed in two meets this past weekend, the first at No. 10 Kentucky, Feb. 10, and the second at Western Michigan, Feb. 12. Eastern fell to UK, 197.125-193.575, but still earned a season high 48.650 on vault with all five scores coming in at 9.700 or above. Raisa Boris posted three scores of 9.800 or better against the Wildcats to earn second in all-around with a 39.150 total score. EMU dropped its second meet of the weekend to the Broncos, 196.600-195.175, its best team score of the season. Six Eagles posted career-best scores against WMU, including an impressive 9.900 bars performance by Boris.
MOVIN' ON UP: Eastern Michigan recorded a season-high 195.175 team score against the Broncos, Feb.12, besting its previous high of 194.050 tallied at the West Virginia Quad, Jan. 29. Prior to their setback at Central Michigan, where EMU posted a 192.050 team total, the Eagles had improved on each of their previous team scores at each of their following meets. In the team's season opener at Arizona State, Jan.13, EMU recorded a 192.150 as a team. The Green and White went on to tally a 193.575 at Iowa State, Jan. 20, then added a 193.975 two days later against Ball State, Jan.22. Finally, Eastern Michigan notched a 194.050 overall score at West Virginia, Jan. 29.
NINER NINER: Raisa Boris earned a career-best 9.900 on bars at Western Michigan, Feb.12, to land in a tie for first overall. Boris bested her previous high of 9.875 set last season at the Towson Quad, Feb. 4. The junior joins Ella Chemotti and Anna Grace McCullough as the only Eagles on the active roster to post 9.900 scores on bars. Additionally, Boris is the 12th person in program history to record a 9.900 on the apparatus.
CHANGE YOU BEST: Six Eagles posted new career high scores across five categories in the team's two meets this weekend. At Kentucky, Feb.10, Alana Fisher and Sophia Rios earned a 9.775 and a 9.700, respectively, for personal bests. Against the Broncos, and in addition to Raisa Boris' impressive 9.900 effort, Hannah Hartung recorded a career-high 9.800 on bars in just her third appearance this season. Kyrie Lowe also made a personal-best 9.800 on beam in her second meet on the apparatus, along with a 9.650 career mark on floor. Ella Chemotti finished off the career meet for EMU with personal best scores of 9.750 on floor and 38.850 in all-around.
'RAI'SING TO THE TOP: Raisa Boris continues to rise through the Mid-American Conference's top 10 event performers after the sixth week of competition. Boris climbed to fourth overall on bars from the sixth place position last week with an average score of 9.839. The junior's average all-around score of 38.939 also rose to fifth after being ranked at sixth for the last three weeks.
FLYING HIGH: Along with Boris, classmates Jordan Jankowski and Trinity Macy are also ranked within the conference top 10 event performers. Jankowski's 9.800 bars average score sits in a tie for 10th in the MAC with Kent State's Olivia Amodei. Macy is ranked 10th as well with an 9.737 average on balance beam.
YPSILANTI 49ERS: Eastern Michigan has recorded four event scores of 49.000 or better so far this season. The Eagles tallied its highest event score of the 2023 campaign, a 49.175 on bars, at home against Ball State, Jan. 22. The score ties with Central Michigan as the top team performance on uneven bars in the MAC through six weeks of competition.
In its most recent meet against Western Michigan, Feb. 12, The Green and White posted two scores of 49.000 better, including a season-best 49.000 on floor. EMU also earned a 49.150 on bars against the Chippewas with four Eagles posting individual scores of 9.800 or better to boost the team tally. Eastern Michigan also recorded a season-high 49.000 on beam at the West Virginia Quad, Jan. 29.
BANANA'S BACK: Battling back from injury, Hannah Hartung appeared in her first meet, Feb. 12, against Western Michigan, since the team's season opener at Arizona State, Jan.13. Hartung competed bars against the Broncos, earning a career-high 9.800 to count towards the team score. Hartung has appeared in 12 meets in her four-year career at EMU, mainly as part of the team's vault and bars lineups.
PERFECT MATCH: Four Eagles matched their personal bests in two different events against Western Michigan. Hadyn Crossen and Kyrie Lowe both tied their career highs on bars with 9.875 and 9.800 performances respectively. Anna Grace McCullough and Raisa Boris also posted duel 9.850s on floor to match their personal bests and share a team-high score in the event.
FIRST YEAR PHENOM: Kyrie Lowe had two impressive performances this past Sunday, Feb. 12, against Western Michigan. The freshman notched two career-best 9.800 scores as part of the beam and bars lineups and her beam score good for a team best. Lowe has now posted three 9.800 performances on bars this season against Ball State, Jan. 22, Central Michigan, Feb. 3, and in the most recent meet at Western Michigan, Feb. 12.
ALL-AROUND ELLA: Ella Chemotti made her third all-around appearance for Eastern Michigan against WMU, Feb. 12. The sophomore tallied a career-high 38.850 across all four events, highlighted by a personal-best 9.750 on the floor. In previous meets, the sophomore appeared mainly as part of the Eagles' vault, bars, and beam lineups.
KEY EAGLES: Awarded after every contest, the Eastern Michigan gymnastics coaching staff choose one gymnast to anoint as that meet's Key Eagle. Raisa Boris earned the title against Kentucky, Feb. 10, as she posted 39.150 in all-around and three team-best scores of 9.800 or better on bars, beam, and floor to highlight competition for EMU. Kyrie Lowe took the honor in the battle against the Broncos, Feb. 12. The freshman notched two career-best 9.800 scores on bars and beam while her beam score was also good for a team high.
SPRING(BOARD) FORWARD: EMU recorded a season high 48.650 on vault at Kentucky, Feb.10. All five scores counted towards the team total came in a 9.700 or better, including a team-high 9.775 by Molly Parris and Alana Fisher. Fisher and Sophia Rios also earned career best marks on the apparatus against the Wildcats with 9.775 and 9.700 scores respectively.
LAST TIME VS. NIU: The Eagles concluded their 2022 regular season against Northern Illinois inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center, March 13. Eastern Michigan ultimately dropped the contest, 196.350-195.375, but still earned a season-best 49.325 on floor, which tied for fifth in program history on the event. The team's floor performance was highlighted by former Eagle Shannon Gregory's personal-best 9.900 score. Anna Grace McCullough also earned her career high on bars against NIU with a 9.900 score. Additionally, Molly Parris posted a career best all-round effort with a 39.125 overall score.
ALL TIME VS. NIU: Northern Illinois leads Eastern Michigan 12-7 since 2003. The Huskies also own a 8-2 advantage over the Eagles when the meet is not played on home turf. Between 2010 and 2012, EMU defeated NIU in three straight meets, the longest winning streak the Green and White hold against their upcoming opponent.
ON THE HORIZON: Eastern Michigan begins its three meet homestand against Kent State, Sunday, Feb. 26, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. The meet will be broadcasted on ESPN+, where Brent Balbinot (play-by-play) and former Eagle Kristin Borg (analyst) will have the call. Meet time is slated for 1 p.m.
