Eastern recorded four top-10 all-time indoor program finishes in South Bend
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's track and field teams put forth a successful effort at the Notre Dame Invitational today, Jan. 21, in South Bend, Ind.
Both the men's and women's team earned overall victories for the day, as the men put up 161.5 points to cruise to the first-place finish. Southern Illinois University, the second-place finisher, was 51 points behind the Eagles. Meanwhile, the women used a 147-point effort to claim the win by a comfortable, 16-point margin.
How it Happened
The men and women combined to produce 21 personal records on the day and four top-10 all-time EMU finishes. The women's team recorded 14 of the 21 total personal bests.
In the women's 60m hurdles preliminary race, it was Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) that stole the show. She ran a personal-best time of 8.51 seconds in the event, good for the 10th-best mark in school history. Meanwhile, in the men's running of the 60m hurdles, Yvan Lopes Ribeiro (Nice, France- Lycée Honoré d'Estiennes d'Orves-American International) recorded a personal standard of 7.78, which ties sixth-best time at Eastern. He also tied for sixth in EMU history in the triple jump with a 14.96m performance. Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) rounded out today's record-setting group with a personal-best, 7:59.67 in the men's 3,000m to finish second and become just the fifth EMU runner to ever break the 8:00.00 mark in the event.
EMU picked up 14 event wins on the day, including nine for the men's team and five for the women's team. In the men's long jump, Eastern Michigan swept the top three spots, while Lopes Ribeiro claimed the top spot with a jump of 7.47m, his EMU-career-best. In the men's weight throw, Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-The Bowman Leadership) picked up yet another victory with a toss of 21.98m. Eastern also swept the top three sports in the men's triple jump, with Lopes Ribeiro claiming the victory with a jump of 14.96m. In the men's 800m, freshmen Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Deer Lakes) won the race in 1:51.18, while fellow first-year Kian Wiles (Hull, England-St. Mary's College) finished second with a mark of 1:51.70. Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) took home first place in the men's 3000m, with a time of 7:56.55, while Gualter finished in second. Finally, EMU's relay team took home a win in the 4x400m event with a time of 3:16.07.
In the women's weight throw, Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) took the top spot with a mark of 18.27m. Meanwhile, Isabella Brent (Dearborn Heights, Mich.-Divine Child) finished fifth with a throw of 15.03m, a personal-best by four-feet-seven-inches. Cadwell also one the shot put with a hurl of 13.08, to successfully sweep the throwing events. In the women's 60m hurdles final, Eastern Michigan took the top two spots, with Gazaway winning with a time of 8.61. Wade was just behind her with a second-place finish of 8.68. Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich.-Cadillac) was also incredible today, winning the 800m dash with a time of 2:10.99, defeating the second-place finisher by nearly two seconds and posting a personal-best time that was 0.08 seconds off of cracking the EMU top-10.
