Track and Field to Make Showings at Two Weekend Events

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (EMUEagles.com) -- Representatives from the Eastern Michigan University men's and women's indoor track and field teams are both set to compete this weekend at both the UNM Team Open, a two-day event hosted by the University of New Mexico, beginning Friday, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m. MT. and the Jet's Pizza Invitational, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University on the same day.
On the men's side, Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-The Bowman Leadership) has made the venture to New Mexico. There, he will compete in the weight throw. Meanwhile, the women's team will send Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child) and Maleah Scott (Farmington, Mich.-Farmington) north to Saginaw to compete in Friday's pentathlon.
LAST TIME OUT: he Eastern Michigan University men's and women's track and field teams put forth a successful effort at the Notre Dame Invitational, Jan. 21, in South Bend, Ind. Both the men's and women's team earned overall victories for the day, as the men put up 161.5 points to cruise to the first-place finish. Southern Illinois University, the second-place finisher, was 51 points behind the Eagles. Meanwhile, the women used a 147-point effort to claim the win by a comfortable, 16-point margin.
EMU picked up 14 event wins on the day, including nine for the men's team and five for the women's team. Stephenson picked up the victory in the weight throw with a toss of 21.98m. Meanwhile, Wheeler finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, while Scott finished seventh. Wheeler was also part of the team's 4x400m relay team that finished second at the Notre Dame Invitational, and also competed in the shot put. Scott participated in the high jump for the EMU women, finishing ninth.
