LET'S TALK ABOUT TEMPE: The Eagles opened up their season with a third place finish at the Arizona State Triangular, Jan.13. Eastern recorded a 192.150 team score putting the squad behind Arizona State (196.375) and UC Davis (193.150). Ella Chemotti highlighted the competition for EMU, taking first place on beam with a 9.850 in front of ASU standouts Gracie Reeves and Emily White who tied for second at 9.825.
The Green and White recorded nine scores of 9.700 or better, including two 9.850s by Chemotti and Raisa Boris. While the Eagles best event was floor where they notched a 48.525 team score, four Eastern gymnasts scored 9.700 or better on bars in the first meet of the 2023 season.
NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP: A regional qualifier in the event last year, Ella Chemotti's first place performance on beam highlighted the Arizona State Triangular for the Eagles. Chemotti's 9.850 last week earned her second place in the Mid American Conference on beam behind Central Michigan's Adriana Bustelo.
The sophomore has now scored a 9.850 or better seven times on beam in her two- year collegiate career. Chemotti's career high on the apparatus stands at 9.950 which she earned at the 2022 EMU Quad, Jan. 28.
'RAI'SING THE BAR: Raisa Boris scored 9.850 on bars at the Arizona State Triangular, Jan. 13 to tie for the top individual score among all Eagles and finish fourth overall. She has now recorded a 9.850 or better on bars five times in her career at EMU. Boris' career best on the apparatus stands at 9.875 which she set against Ball State, Feb. 20, 2022. The junior also tied for the top spot in all-around against the Sun Devils and Aggies and recorded a 38.200 across the four events.
BANANA'S BACK: Battling back from injury, Hannah Hartung appeared in her first meet since March 7, 2020 at the Arizona State Triangular, Jan.13. Hartung competed on vault and bars for the Eagles and earned a 9.700 on bars to count towards the team score, her fourth career score of 9.700 or better on the apparatus. As a freshman in 2020, the Nebraska native appeared in nine meets as a key member of EMU's vault and bars lineups.
HADYN IT AGAIN: Hadyn Crossen continues to be an important part of Eastern Michigan's event lineups in 2023. The senior competed in three events, bars, beam and floor, at the Arizona State Triangular, Jan. 13. Crossen tied for the top spot among Eagles on floor with Raisa Boris at 9.775 for ninth overall. The Indiana native has bettered the score only twice in her collegiate career as she recorded a 9.850 and 9.875 on floor in back-to-back meets March 2021.
NICE TO MEET YOU: Three gymnasts, Trinity Macy, Cassie Bergin and Kyrie Lowe, made their first appearance in Green and White leotards at the Arizona State Triangular, Jan. 13. Both in their first collegiate meet, Lowe recorded an impressive 9.775 on bars while Bergin notched a 9.625 as part of the beam lineup. A transfer from Pittsburgh, Macy earned a 9.650 on floor to count towards the team score. The junior also competed as an exhibition gymnast on beam and floor and recorded a 9.725 and a 9.575 on the events respectively.
KEY EAGLE: Awarded after every meet, the Eastern gymnastics coaches choose one gymnast to anoint as the Key Eagle of Meet. Emma Lewis earned the honor after she stepped up and recorded a 9.575 on vault at the Arizona State Triangular, Jan. 13. The sophomore looks to be a key member of EMU's vault line up this season after she appeared in six meets on the apparatus in 2022.
KATIE'S NO STRANGER: Prior to her time in Ypsilanti, sixth year Head Coach Katie Minasola spent six years working at Iowa State as both an assistant coach and as the associate head coach. Minasola started as an assistant coach before assuming associate head coach responsibilities during the 2017 campaign. Under her tenure, Iowa State appeared at five NCAA Regionals in six years. Minasola guided four gymnasts in Michelle Shealy, Caitlin Brown, Meaghan Sievers and Haylee Young, to individual NCAA Championship appearances in five straight seasons from 2013 to 2017. In 2013, Minasola coached Shealy to the best finish at the NCAA Championship on beam in Cyclone history and to All-America First-Team honors.
