EMU squares off against top ranked national and regional teams
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country program will travel to Louisville, Ky. for the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic, hosted by the University of Louisville. The meet is slated for a 9:30 a.m. ET start Saturday, Oct. 1 at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.
The men's team will kick off the day in the Gold Collegiate Division 8k. The Gold Division is the top competition level for the meet, headlined by US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national vote-receiving University of Tennessee. In the Great Lakes Region, four USTFCCCA ranked teams will be making the trek to Louisville, including Miami University (6th in region), Eastern (8th), the University of Cincinnati (11th), and Kent State University (12th).
EMU's women harriers are also competing in the top-flight Gold Division 5k, scheduled for a 10:15 a.m. start. USTFCCCA 23rd ranked University of Kentucky, along with vote-receivers Furman University and West Virginia University will headline the division. Two Great Lakes Region USTFCCCA teams are also running in the Gold Division: Miami (11th in region) and Eastern (13th).
Two weeks ago at the Mel Brodt Open, Eastern Michigan registered three top-10 men's finishers, led by freshman Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich.-Charlevoix), his second-career top-10 finish in as many races. Peterson (fourth) was followed by sophomore Linus Vennemann (Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany-Gymnasium "In Der Wüste") (seventh) and freshman Joey Furlong (Deer Park, Ill.-Barrington) (ninth).
Also at the Mel Brodt Open, senior Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) and junior Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya-Middle Tennessee State) once again charted top-10 finishes for the second consecutive meet, with Davies crossing the finish line in fifth and Rono following in tenth. The upperclassmen's contributions pushed the Eagles ahead to a second place team finish.
