EMU Volleyball Drops Home-Opener to Toledo

Samantha Basham's 10 kills puts her over 700 career attacks

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of Toledo Thursday, Sept. 22, in its home-opener inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
 
The conference loss drops the Eagles to 1-12 overall, and 0-1 in league play.
 
Senior Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio-Newark Catholic) finished with a match-high 10 kills with fellow senior Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ontario-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) earning nine. Sophomore Kendall Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-University) led the Eagles with six digs, besting Basham and senior Kamryn Stilwell (Parma, Ohio-Padua Franciscan) who had five digs each in the match.
 
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles fell behind early, losing the first set 25-20. EMU trailed by as many as nine points as Toledo never surrendered the lead in a set that was knotted up zero times.
 
SET 2 | The Green and White then lost the second set 25-14 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. The Eagles lost the first point and couldn't take the lead before dropping the set.
 
SET 3 | Unfortunately, Eastern Michigan failed to prolong the match and lost in set number three. The Eagles came up short by the score of 25-22. Toledo grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 in a set that was knotted up five times before the Rockets took over in the second half of the stanza.
 
Match Notes
» Basham registered a team-high three aces in the loss. The three aces surpassed her season-high two aces against the University of Louisiana, Aug. 26. Basham's three aces on the match were short one of her career-high four aces over Central Michigan University, March 16, 2021. It is the fourth time this season she has led the Green and White in aces.
» Additionally, Basham had a team-high 10 kills for Eastern Michigan. It is the fifth time this season that the Ohio-native has recorded double-digit kills for the Green and White and 30th in her career. Her 10 match kills to add to her career total of 706, overcoming the 700 career-kill milestones. 119 of the 706 Kills (16.8%) have come in the 2022 campaign.
» Basham's two block assists against the Rockets were good for a total of 101, surpassing her milestone of 100 career block assists.
» Chase collected three total blocks against Toledo in today's match, adding to her total of 48 on the season. The senior remains third in the Mid-American Conference in total blocks. Moreover, the middle blocker's 48 stops lead the Eagles in total blocks, with freshman Sabrina Gremm (North Royalton, Ohio-Gilmour Academy) trailing by 15 with a total 33 blocks.
» Both Chase and sophomore Madeline Timmerman (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Central) led the Eagles with three total blocks each. This is Chase's eighth time in the 2022 season with leading blocks and Timmerman's third.
»  Burk registered a team-high six digs for the Eagles. It is the fourth time this season that the setter has tallied at least six digs in a match. Burk also led the Green and White attackers with a team-high 15 assists for her sixth match of the 2022 season with double-digit helpers.
 
Historical Notes
» Despite the loss, Eastern Michigan remains ahead of Toledo in the all-time series record, 61-20. Furthermore, the Eagles have an all-time record of 37-6 at home against the Rockets and a 19-4 record in the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
»EMU competed in their fourth three-setter of the 2022 season, and currently possess a 1-3 record in those four matches. Under head coach Darcy Dorton, Eastern is now 12-21 in matches decided by three sets.
