Waselewsky Tabbed MAC Defensive Player of the Week

The freshman averaged a MAC-best 6.22 digs per set last week with a MAC freshman-best 33 digs in one game
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan freshman defensive specialist/libero Layna Waselewsky was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday, Nov. 17.
Waselewksy (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) led the MAC in digs per set last week averaging 6.22 per frame and recorded a MAC freshman-high 33 digs against Miami, Nov. 14. The honor marks the first of her career and the third player of the week award for the Eagles this season, and the second of the defensive category as Hatteras Welker (Sunbury, Ohio/Sunbury) previously earned the defensive honor, Sept. 8.
Waselewksy ended her rookie campaign strong as she recorded 6.22 digs per set (56 total), the best mark in the conference last week, and secured an assists/digs double-double in two games against the Miami RedHawks, Nov. 14-15. Waselewksy started the week with a 10 assists/33 digs double-double, the first of her career. Her 33 digs against the RedHawks, Nov. 14, were the most from a MAC freshman in a single game this season, and the seventh-most from a freshman in the country. Her 33 digs were also the third-most in the MAC among all players. She played a large role in the Eagles posting 104 digs in the contest, the third-most by value in the MAC this season, most in the previous week, and most from the Eagles in a single game since they finished with 106 digs in a five-set win over Kent State, Feb. 15, 2021.
Waselewksy followed up her 33-dig performance with 23 digs, five assists, and one ace in a five-set win over Miami, Nov. 15, marking the first consecutive 20+ dig outings of her career.
