Eastern slips to 1-4-3 on the year following their home MAC-opening tie
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University soccer program saw Jamie Lefebvre (London, Ontario-A.B. Lucas Secondary) score on a beautiful running header, but it was not enough as the Eagles played visiting Central Michigan University to a 1-1 draw Thursday, Sept. 22, in both sides' Mid-American Conference opener. The Eagles (1-4-3, 0-0-1 MAC), who were playing on the new artificial turf installed at Scicluna Field for the first time this year, fired 21 shots overall and 12 on frame as the Chippewas (1-5-2, 0-0-1 MAC) scored in the 65' to force the eventual draw.
How It Happened
The Eagles were on the front much of the match as was evidenced by a 21-12 shot advantage on the day, including a 13-4 lead in the first half. After several attempts on goal were turned aside by CMU goalkeeper Emma Shingler, the Eagles struck in the 28'. On the play, Maddie O'Farrell (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Catholic) stole the ball and carried down the left flank. From there, she lofted a pass over the defense and into the 18-yard box where Lefebvre ran under the ball and headed it past the CMU keeper for the 1-0 lead. The goal is the first of the season for Lefebvre.
After the break, the visitors turned the tables and produced several strong chances. On their tying play, the Chippewas send Ashley Scesniak to take a corner kick that fell to the ground in the middle of the penalty area where Lauren Walker was able to poke the ball home to tie the match at 1-1.
Both sides had equally impressive chances to win the contest in the later minutes. First, CMU drove in and the ball came to Matilda Melin, who moved in on goal from the right corner and tried to go low, but Eastern's Rebecca Przybylo (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) came up big for one of her five saves as she slid low and took away the angle to knock the ball away for a throw-in. With under 40 seconds remaining, it was Eastern's turn with Lefebvre almost netting a brace as she took a through pass to the top of the area and tried to fire past the on-coming keeper, but her shot just missed the post, keeping the match at 1-1.
