Cross Country Prepares for Trip to Bowling Green

The Eagles look to build off strong starts at Jeff Drenth Memorial
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's cross country teams will hit the road Friday, Sept. 16, to Bowling Green, Ohio to compete in the Mel Brodt Open, hosted by Bowling Green State University.
The meet, held at the Bowling Green Cross Country Course, will kick off with the women's 6k race at 5:30 p.m. The men's 8k is scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. To conclude, an awards presentation for the top 10 finishers in each division will start at 6:45 p.m.
EMU will be joined by the host Falcons, along with Central Michigan University and Oakland University. On the men's side, the Eagles are the highest ranking team, coming in at seventh in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Great Lakes Region rankings. Both Central Michigan and Oakland are ranked in the USTFCCA Women's Great Lakes Region, placing 12th and 13th respectively.
The men's team is looking to capture its second straight team win after taking the crown at the 5K Jeff Drenth Memorial, Sept. 2. Senior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) took home first place with a time of 14:57.4, which was 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Magnusson was joined in the top 10 by fellow senior Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River) (5th - 15:24.2) and freshmen Kian Wiles (Hull, England-St. Mary's College) (4th - 15:16.3), and Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich.-Charlevoix) (7th - 15:35.8).
The women's team also kicked off their season with a strong performance, placing second in the same event. Senior Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) paced Eagle harriers, crossing the finish line in second place with a time of 18:13.3. Newcomers junior Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya-Middle Tennessee State) (7th - 18:34.2) and senior Julia Pleskaczynska (Lublin, Poland-High School No. III them. Union of Lublin-Boise State University) (10th - 18:41.8) rounded out the top 10 for EMU.
Following Friday's meet, the Eagles will take a week off to prepare for the Live in Lou Classic in Louisville, Ky., Sat., Oct. 1, hosted by the University of Louisville. More information will be made available closer to the meet.
