Four student-athletes tabbed for leadership roles
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan cross country program has announced the four student-athletes that will be taking lead as captains this season, announced Director/Women's Head Coach Sue Parks and Men's Head Coach Mark Rinker.
In the 2022 season, seniors Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University), Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River), Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson), and Julia Pleskaczynska (Lublin, Poland-High School No. III them. Union of Lublin-Boise State University) will be donning the captain's "C."
"We are excited to announce our captains for the 2022 cross country season," said Parks. "These individuals have all shown qualities that you look for in leaders. We feel that these four will set the tone for the team as we work towards reaching our goals this season. We are proud of this group and we know that they will be a great example to the rest of the team as we look forward to carrying on the strong tradition of EMU cross country."
Magnusson is the defending men's cross country Mid-American Conference champion after crossing the finish line in 24:05.7 in the 8K. He earned an at-large bid for the NCAA Championships, where he finished the 10K race in 31:40.0.
Zuercher has been one of the most consistent leaders for the men's team and was named captain for the third-straight year. On the track, the Rocky River, Ohio native posted a top 10 finish at the Warrior Challenge, finishing in 24:35.7.
St. Bernard joins Zuercher as a returning captain after wearing the "C" last season. She set a career-best time in the Mel Brodt Open of 18:28.4, which placed her seventh overall.
Pleskanczynska begins her first season on the EMU cross country team, but the Lublin, Poland native spent the 2021 track season under Sue Parks' direction. She ran a career-best 4:59.68 in the mile this past season at the GVSU Big Meet. In her time at Boise State, she competed in three cross country meets with a career-best 6K time of 21:25.7.
