NAPERVILLE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team and senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) reside atop the leaderboard at the 2022 Mid-American Conference Championships after day one at White Eagle Golf Club. The Eagles posted an 18-hole total of 289 (+1), while Collins sits at 67 (-5) on the 7,065-yard, par-72 setup.
The Green and White hold a three shot lead over second place Toledo (292) and a six-stroke edge over third place Kent State (295). Northern Illinois is tied for fourth at 300, while Ball State (301), Bowling Green (305), Miami (306), and Ohio (308) rounded out the field.
How It Happened
Collins' 10th career round at the MAC Championship was a special one, as he had never shot better than a 70 at the league's showcase event. The Caledon, Ontario native tallied six birdies on the day before giving back a shot on No. 18. He finished the front side with a four-under 32, before adding a 35 after the turn.
Overall, Collins' score is tied for the lowest by an Eagle this year, as classmate Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) previously fired a 67 in the second round of the Craft Farms Intercollegiate, March 28.
In total, all five EMU student-athletes sit within the top 25. In his first MAC Championship, sophomore Cam Kellett (London, Ontario-Saint Thomas Aquinas-Nevada) carded a 72 and sits in a tie for fourth. Senior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) is tied for 11th after a round of 72, while Celone is 16th at 76. In his return to Chicagoland, sophomore MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) added a 78 for 25th place.

Due to the threat of weather moving into the area, second round tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT (8:30 a.m. ET) off No 1 and No. 10. EMU will be paired with Toledo off No. 1, starting at 8:20 a.m. CT (9:30 a.m. ET).
