NAPERVILLE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – After two days at the 2022 Mid-American Conference men's golf championship, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team is positioned in third place with an overall team score of 598 (289-309) Saturday, April 30. The University of Toledo is atop the leaderboard, posting a 19-over 595 (292-303) following 36 holes of golf at the White Eagle Golf Club course.
The Rockets are one shot ahead of Kent State (596) and three in front of Eastern Michigan on a leaderboard that has the top five teams separated by just eight strokes. At one point, Toledo led by as many as nine strokes during today's play but saw its lead whittled down to one stroke at the end of the day.
Bowling Green is in fourth place with a 602 followed by Northern Illinois (603), Miami (607), Ball State (616), and Ohio (628).
How It Happened
With the wind blowing, scores were elevated from Friday's opening round that saw the Eagle gain the early advantage. Toledo's Barend Botha (68-76) and the Golden Flashes' Josh Gilkison (72-72) are leading all individuals at even-par 144. They are just one shot ahead of Miami's Jack Ebner (73-72) and Eastern Michigan's Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) (67-78).
Senior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) and sophomore Cam Kellett (London, Ontario-Saint Thomas Aquinas-Nevada) are tied for 10th with a 151. Meanwhile, sophomore MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) and senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) added a 153 (78-75) and a 155 (76-79), respectively.
In total, all five EMU student-athletes sit within the top 25.
