NAPERVILLE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will compete at the 2022 Mid-American Conference Championship Friday through Sunday, April 29-May 1, at White Eagle Golf Club. Northern Illinois University will host the three-day, 54-hole event for the eight MAC schools which sponsor men's golf – Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio, and Toledo.
Having one of the best seasons in program history, the Eagles have posted the fifth-lowest four-player team scoring average at 293.0. Overall, Eastern Michigan has finished in the top-five at two different tournaments this season, including a third-place finish at the Boilermaker Invitational, April 9-10.
Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) is still on pace for the lowest career scoring average in program history at 73.19, just 0.11 strokes ahead of 2007 MAC Champion Graham Hill's standard of 73.3 set in 2005-08. Sophomore MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) is second on the team with a 73.81 average. Collins, who is ranked 760th by Golfweek, has 11 rounds of par-or-better this season to go along with two top-10 finishes.
The league's men's golf championship will be held at the 7,065-yard, par-72 White Eagle Golf Club for the first time ever.

Last year's storyline was continuous improvement for Eastern at the 2021 MAC Championship. Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's club notched a 304 during the final round to finish in fifth place with a cumulative score of 934 (321-309-304) at Sycamore Hills Golf Club course in Fort Wayne, Ind. Eastern joined Kent State and Miami as the only schools to post round over round improvement.
KSU captured its fifth straight MAC Championships crown with a team total of 46-over par 910, 13 shots in front of Northern Illinois (923). The Golden Flashes' Chris Vandette won the individual title at 10-over par 226, finishing one stroke ahead of the Huskies Jordan Less and Miami's Cam Solomon and Charlie Nikitas. EMU's Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) carded his fourth career top-10 finish with a tie for 10th.
This year's senior class still has their sights set on finishing the job from the 2019 MAC Championship. That season there was heavy anticipation and buildup for a final round battle between the Eagles and Golden Flashes for the title. Unfortunately, it was Mother Nature that in the end stole the show, as heavy rains overnight forced the cancellation of the final round at Club Walden.
The Eagles and Golden Flashes shared the team championship, however, Kent State earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships due to tiebreakers. KSU won the cumulative total of non-counting scores by three, 154-151.
The Eagles put together two strong rounds with a 294 in the first round and a one-under 287 for a two-round tally of 581. EMU was six strokes ahead of Kent State after round one, but the Golden Flashes rallied to fire a seven-under 281 to close the gap and tie the cumulative total at 581.
The 2019 title was Eastern Michigan's third all-time MAC men's golf championship after previously earning the trophy in 2007 and 2008.
Kent State is ranked No. 62 in Golfstat's national rankings followed by Toledo (100), Northern Illinois (140), Eastern Michigan (153), Ball State (162), Miami (166), Bowling Green (219), and Ohio (239).
Playing this weekend for EMU will be Celone, senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary), Smith, Mason, and sophomore Cam Kellett (London, Ontario-Saint Thomas Aquinas-Nevada).
The winner will receive the MAC's automatic bid to one of six NCAA Regional sites May 16-18. The 2022 regional sites are: Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas (Texas A&M, host); OSU Golf Club – Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State, host); Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Connecticut (Yale, host); PGA National Resort – Champions Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida (Florida Atlantic, host); The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, California (Pacific, host) and the Jimmie Austin Golf Club (Oklahoma, host).
The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to play in the championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 27–June 1.
