Senior Brady Huebbe belts two home runs in the loss
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped its final game of the four-game series against the University of Toledo Sunday, April 24, 15-5 in seven innings.
Senior Brady Huebbe (Peru, Ill.-La Salle-Peru (Northern Illinois)) led the Eagles offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs on two home runs. Junior Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio-Milford (Toledo)) added to Huebbe's awesome power-hitting performance by going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Junior Frankie Volkers (Maple Grove, Minn.-Maple Grove (North Iowa)) (1-3) got the ball to start for Eastern Michigan (15-24, 10-14 MAC) and took the loss.
How It Happened
The Eagles were trailing 8-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Huebbe got Eastern Michigan's bats going with a one-out solo home run.
EMU kept the Rockets off the board before narrowing the gap further in the fifth. The Green and White offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Huebbe, which brought the score to 8-5 in favor of the Rockets. The Eagles were unable to get any closer, as Toledo added seven runs to its tally on the way to a 15-5 final.
Game Notes
» Eastern Michigan got a two-homer day from Huebbe. The pair of dingers were Huebbe's fifth and sixth, respectively, of the 2022 campaign. The outfielder now has 11 career home runs. Additionally, it is Huebbe's first career multi-homer game.
» With the two home runs, Huebbe is the first Eagle to hit multiple homers in a game since teammate Daniel Warkentin (Leamington, Ontario-Leamington District (Parkland)) tallied a pair of round-trippers earlier in the season versus Akron, March 26.
» Eastern Michigan's highest-scoring inning was the fifth when it pushed four runs across. The four runs mark the 16th time this season the Eagles have amassed four-or-more runs in a half-inning this season.
» On the basepaths, sophomore Cory Taylor (Shelbyville, Ind.-Shelbyville) stole two bases in Sunday's game. The two stolen bases were the first of the season for Taylor.
» Kirk finished with an RBI on a double in the fifth inning. The extra-base hit is Kirk's team-leading 29th of the season. Furthermore, the run batted in is the outfielder's 35th on the year, a mark that also paces the Eagles.
» As a team, Eastern has now hit 53 home runs on the season. That number equates to a 1.36 home runs per game average, the program's best since 2009.
