Collins and Mason Tied for 10th at Rutherford Invite

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – Seniors Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) and Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) led the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team on the first day of the 45th Annual Rutherford Invitational Saturday, April 16. Collins turned in rounds 71 and 72, while Mason notched a 74 and 69 for a two-round score of one-over 143. The duo are in a tie for 10th on the par-71, 7,202-yard PSU Blue Course.
Eastern Michigan heads into Sunday's final round at 12-over, 580, as a team. The Eagles shot a 296 in the opening round on a gusty morning before firing an even-par, 284, during the drizzly afternoon. Host Penn State trails first-place No. 33 Michigan State by four strokes. The Spartans currently lead the team field at one-over 569 (284-285).
Playing as an individual, PSU's James Allen leads the field at seven-under 135. He fired a career-low tying 66 in the second round after opening with a 69.
How It Happened
Mason was bogey free in the afternoon after turning in five of them in the morning's round. Collins added four birdies in the first 18 holes and added two more in the afternoon, while finishing just two holes over par in the second round
Behind Mason and Collins, sophomore Cam Kellett (London, Ontario-Saint Thomas Aquinas-Nevada) dialed up a strong second round to post a 71 to close the day in a tied for 22nd with a 146 (75-71). Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) also improved in his second 18, finishing at 72 in 35th with a 148 (76-72). Sophomore MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) carded back-to-back rounds of 76 to reside in 64th at 152 (76-76).

Action at the Rutherford Intercollegiate concludes Sunday with the third and final round on Penn State's Blue Course. A possibility of a delayed start exists in the morning with frost expected overnight.
