Baseball Falls to Ohio, 12-8, Friday Afternoon

Eastern tallies a season-high seven doubles in the loss
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- On a gloomy, rainy Friday afternoon the Eastern Michigan University baseball program fell 12-8 to Ohio University inside Oestrike Stadium.
Junior Frankie Volkers (Maple Grove, Minn.-Maple Grove (North Iowa)) (1-2) came out of the bullpen for Eastern Michigan (13-17, 9-8 MAC) and took the loss. Senior Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) was a bright spot for the Eagles, starting the ballgame and throwing 7.0 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.
Junior Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio-Milford (Toledo)) led the way offensively for the Eagles, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double, a home run, and two RBI. Junior Gabe Denton (Clare, Mich.-Clare (North Iowa)) provided a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and three RBI. Freshman Aaron Dolney (Plymouth, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) also helped out, going 3-for-5 for EMU with three doubles.
How It Happened
Trailing 4-0, the Eagles first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Eastern Michigan's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Denton.
The score stayed at 4-4 until the very next inning, when the Eagles put runs on the scoreboard once again. Eastern scored twice on Kirk's two-run homer, which brought the Eagles lead to 6-4.
Eastern Michigan's lead had disappeared once the eighth inning arrived and turned into a 9-6 Ohio advantage, when the Eagles cut that deficit to 9-8. EMU notched two runs off of Ohio pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double from Denton. The Eagles were unable to get any closer, as Ohio added three runs to their tally on the way to a 12-8 final.
Game Notes
» Eastern Michigan pitchers faced 45 Ohio hitters in the game, allowing 11 ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out five.
» As a team, EMU recorded seven doubles. That mark is the most two-baggers in a contest this year for the Green and White.
» Senior Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock) recorded a double in the second inning. The extra base hit was the infielder's 97th career hit as an Eagle. Easter needs just three hits to eclipse the 100 hit-mark. The captain also added an RBI in the loss, his 23rd of the season.
» Senior Brady Huebbe (Peru, Ill.-La Salle-Peru) recorded his 23rd RBI of the season when he tabbed a sacrifice fly to center field.
» Denton led the Eagles' offense with three RBIs on two hits, including a walk and a run scored. Denton (21 RBIs) is now the fifth Eagle to earn 20-or-more RBIs on the year.
» Eastern Michigan's highest-scoring inning was the fourth when it pushed four runs across. It is the 14th time this season the Eagles have tallied four runs-or-more in a half-inning.
» Kirk powered a towering home run over the right field wall in the bottom of the fifth. The two-run homer is the ninth dinger of the season for the outfielder.
» Freshman Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich.-Essexville-Garber) continued his hot streak with an RBI single in the bottom half of the eighth. The RBI was the outfielder's 14th of the season, a mark that leads all first-year players.
» Dolney led the Eagles, compiling three base knocks in the ballgame. It is Dolney's seventh multi-hit game of the season.

The Eagles will its four-game home series against Ohio with a Saturday doubleheader, April 16. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. inside Oestrike Stadium.
