Eagles Set to Compete at NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) – Junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) and graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) are set to compete in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Friday, March 11 at 5 p.m. E.T. The championships will be hosted by the University of Alabama at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Stephenson and Bryant will join former Eagle Anthony Jones as the only throwers in program history to compete in the weight throw at the national meet twice. Jones qualified in 2015 and 2016 where he finished 13th (20.48m) and seventh (21.52m), respectively.
Former Eagle David Seaborne is the only other EMU thrower to make it to the championship meet in the event. At the 1998 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Seaborne produced a throw of 18.69m for 13th in the competition.
Stephenson has the third-highest seed mark after registering a school-record toss of 23.22m at the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 22. Meanwhile, Bryant owns the fifth-best throw this season, a 23.01m heave set at Grand Valley State University's Big Meet, Feb. 11.
Grand Canyon's Israel OIoyede owns the nation's best mark of 24.45m this season, tied for the fifth-furthest throw in NCAA history. Alabama's Bobby Colantonio is second in the Division I ranks with a 24.15m throw at the UAB Blazer Invitational, Jan. 14. Kent State's Jake Wickey sits in fourth with a career-high 23.15m toss. The record at the national meet is 24.64m, set by Wisconsin's Michael Lihrman in 2015.
ESPN3 will stream the championships live starting at 11 a.m. E.T. Friday, March 11, and 11:30 a.m. E.T. Saturday, March 12. A re-air of the championship will take place starting at 9:30 p.m. E.T. Sunday, March 13 on ESPNU.
