The Eagles were defeated by UCF, 6-1, and bested Charleston, 6-1
ORLANDO, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team finished the day in Orlando, Fla. with an even ledger Thursday, March 3. Eastern started the doubleheader against the University of Central Florida, falling 6-1, before besting the University of Charleston, 6-1. EMU remains .500 on the year, with an overall record of 8-8 in the spring season.
"Even short-handed, UCF is one of the best teams in the country," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We had some opportunities early on to take the doubles and to get some leads in singles matches, but we simply got outplayed doubles point."
Wiseman later added, "Charleston was very competitive and fought hard all the way down their lineup, and really did a great job of making us earn every point. It was a good job by everyone to get the solid win, and get everyone into the match to get some work in."
How It Happened
In its first of two matches of the day, the Green and White earned wins against UCF at No. 3 doubles, and No. 6 singles due to forfeit. That gave the pairing of redshirt sophomore Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-l'Adour, France-Dominique Saint Pau) and redshirt junior Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem College)) the automatic win. However, EMU was unable to clinch the doubles point with another victory. Piatek also received the win in singles at No. 6, as the Eagles fell 6-1 to the Knights.
Against Charleston, Eastern quickly secured the doubles point as redshirt sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) and redshirt senior Vasavi Ganesan (Chennai, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) earned the 6-2 win at No. 1, while Pommiers and Piatek had their second doubles victory of the day at No. 3. In singles action, Redshirt senior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) struck first with a win in the one slot, 6-1, 6-3. Popma followed, finishing her opponent, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (4). The match-winning point came at the hands of redshirt senior Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)), topping the No. 5 opposition, 6-2, 6-4. The Eagles ended the day 1-1 after securing the 6-1 win over the Golden Eagles.
