Eastern Michigan Tennis Splits Final Day in Orlando

The Eagles lost 5-2 to Oakland before defeating St. Petersburg 4-3
ORLANDO, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan tennis team split its last day in Orlando, losing 5-2 to Oakland University, before defeating St. Petersburg College 4-3, Saturday, March 5. Eastern is now 8-8 in the spring season.
"This was definitely not how we wanted to finish our last stretch of matches before conference play," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "Our effort against Oakland was lackluster at best, and an incredibly disappointing loss. It was good to bounce back and get a win against St. Petes, but it was entirely too close considering the difference in levels. Not playing all our starters is no excuse for the match being that close."
Wiseman add, "After a couple days off we will get back to work, trying to clean up things from this trip, and get focused for the start of MAC, when we host the team from Lucas County on the 20th."
How It Happened
Against Oakland, EMU earned the doubles point to start off. The No. 2 pairing of redshirt seniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) got back on track with 6-2 victory. At No. 3, Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India-College of Commerce and Economics) also earned themselves a 6-2 win. Vichare went on to win her singles matchup as well, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6, in the No. 2 spot. The Eagles were unable to get the win, falling 5-2 to the Golden Grizzles.
Later in the day versus St. Petersburg College, the Green and White swept the doubles action. Following the hot start, Eastern saw wins from Pelayo at No. 1 (2-0, ret), Brichackova at No. 3 (6-4, 5-7, 6-2), and redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem College)) at No. 5 (6-0, 6-1). The Eagles went on to win the contest against the Knights, 4-3.
