Ganesan and Popma earn points in single play
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team dropped its first Mid-American Conference match of the season to the University of Toledo, 5-2, today, March 20. The Eagles are now 9-10 overall, and 0-1 in conference play.
"We fought hard and competed at every spot, so it's a tough loss," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "On the other hand, we had great effort and we were really just a handful of points away from being in a position to win the match."
How It Happened
Eastern saw a win in doubles from its No. 2 freshman pairing of Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India-College of Commerce and Economics), topping their Toledo opponents, 6-3. Both the No. 1 and No. 2 pairings fought hard, but neither could not come away with the win to give the Eagles the doubles point, both falling 6-4.
In singles action, it was redshirt sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) who got EMU on the board first, winning 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (5), in the No. 4 spot. Redshirt senior Vasavi Ganesan (Chennai, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) followed close behind, finishing off her Rocket opponent, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 6. Fighting hard at No. 1 was classmate Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)), forcing her match to three sets but ultimately falling, 7-6 (1), 2-6, 1-0 (5). The Green and White battled hard but could not earn the win, falling to the Rockets, 5-2.
