Strong Final Day Propels EMU at GCU Invitational

The Eagles posted the 12th-lowest 54 hole tally in program history
PHOENIX, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team posted the 12th-lowest 54 hole score in program history Tuesday, March 15, at the GCU Invitational. Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's club notched a second round 279 and followed it up with a 287 for a three round cumulative score of 861. The two-day tally is the lowest by an EMU squad since an 850 was shot at the Loyola Intercollegiate, Feb. 22-24, 2020.
Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) recorded his 24th career top-25 finish on the par 71, 7,148 yard GCU Golf Course. The Long Sault, Ontario closed with a 71 to finish the event with a 212 (72-69-71). The two-day mark is his lowest 54 hole tally of the season.
As a team, Eastern finished in 10th with a tally of 861(295-279-287) after beginning the day tied for 18th. Host Grand Canyon won the event with an 834 (279-269-286). Fresno State was second (838) followed by UT Arlington (839), TCU (843), Southern Mississippi (845), and Sacramento State (845).
How It Happened
After Celone's 212, sophomore MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) added an EMU-best score of 213 (71-69-73) in 27th. Senior Blaise Vanitvelt (Fenton Mich.-Flint Powers Catholic-Monteverde Academy) tied for 72nd in his first EMU action with a 220 (76-72-72).
Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) and sophomore Cam Kellett (London, Ontario-Saint Thomas Aquinas-Nevada) turned in scores 221 for a tie for 80th.
