Taige Bryant Earns All-American Status as EMU Closes Indoor Season at NCAA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University was well represented at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships today, March 11, as junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) and graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) both took part in the men's weight throw competition.
How It Happened
After the first round, Bryant and Stephenson sat in seventh (21.55m) and 15th (19.60m), respectively, out of 16 competitors. The Edmond, Okla. native improved on his second throw with a toss of 21.84m to move into sixth.
The Gary, Ind. product registered a heave of 21.54m to take 11th place after round No. 3, but did not advance to the final three throws.
In the finals, Bryant recorded a 22.21-meter launch in his fifth throw to round out the top five. His final throw of the night also went 22.21m, as the graduate student finished sixth overall to notch First-Team All-American honors for the first time in his career in any event. The University of Alabama's Bobby Colantonio took home the year's weight throw crown with 23.60m mark.
The veteran thrower earned three points for EMU to tie for ninth in the country with Mississippi State University after two events.
A re-air of the championship will take place starting at 9:30 p.m. E.T. Sunday, March 13 on ESPNU.

With the indoor season now over for Eastern, the Eagles will turn their attention to outdoors.
