Volleyball Rallies Late, Comes up Short Against Ohio

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell to the Ohio University Bobcats 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-22, 22-25) inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center tonight, Oct. 7, in a Mid-American Conference clash between the two schools.
Despite rallying to win the third set, Eastern (1-16, 0-5 MAC) was unable to pull off its comeback effort.
Senior Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ontario-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) led Eastern's attack with 20 kills on 32 attempts, followed by classmate Samantha Basham (Grandville, Ohio-Newark Catholic) who tallied 19 kills. Sophomore Kendall Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-University) facilitated the Eagle offense with a career-high 44 assists.
Defensively, freshman Emma McMahon (Monroeville, Ind.-Bellmont) recorded a game-high 24 digs for EMU.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles fell behind early in the first set and could not overcome the deficit, dropping the set 25-23. The Bobcats led the entirety of the first set.
SET 2 | In a set that went back and forth early, EMU led 21-20 in the later parts of the game before Ohio went on a five-point run to win its second consecutive set, 25-21.
SET 3 | EMU got out to an early 3-0 lead in the third set and continued to set the tone throughout the game, winning the third set 25-22. Eastern trailed just twice in the third set.
SET 4 | Ohio took control of the fourth and final set, starting with an early 7-5 lead. The Bobcats would not surrender their lead, topping the Eagles 25-22 to take the victory.

» Chase set a career high in kills against Ohio with 20. Her previous career high was 19, set against Ball State University on Nov. 11, 2021. Chase accounted for almost 24 percent of EMU's points against Ohio
» McMahon continued her season-long streak of double digit digs in tonight's loss, registering 21 digs to bring her season total to 244.
» Eastern Michigan reached 50 or more kills for the fifth time this season with 58 tonight. Six different Eagles registered kills against the Bobcats, including double digit stats from Basham, graduate student Callie Minshew (Brandon, Miss.-Brandon-Mississippi State) and Chase.
» Burk blew past her career-high for assists with 43 tonight. The Illinois native's previous career-high came earlier this season, Sept. 30, at Ball State, where she tallied 37. Burk's big night moves her assist total on the season to 134, placing her seventh in the MAC. The effort was also Burk's second career double-double, her first since accomplishing the feat against BSU, Sept. 30. In both instances, she has recorded 11 digs and 35-plus assists.
» Basham matched her season-high for kills with 17. She also charted 17 in the season's first match, Aug. 26, at Louisiana. Basham registered 17.5 points against the Bobcats, giving her 68.5 on the season, good for sixth in the MAC. Basham also led the team in total attacks with 44 tonight, her fourth most this season.
» The Eagles notched 60 or more digs for the fourth time this season, reaching 65 tonight. That total ranks as third most the Green and White have recorded all season, as EMU grabbed 69 digs against the University of Louisiana, Aug. 26 and Coppin State University, Sept. 16.
