Eagles Total 12 Blocks in 3-0 Loss to Kent State

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team racked up 12 blocks in a three-set loss to Kent State University inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center, Oct. 8.

The loss dropped Eastern Michigan's record to 1-17 overall and 0-6 in the Mid-American Conference. 

Fifth year senior Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ontario-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) finished with nine kills on the day to lead the Eagles attack while earning a hitting percentage of .471. Freshman Emma McMahon (Monoreville, Ind.-Bellmont) led the Eagles on the defensive end with 20 digs, accounting for almost half of the team total.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles found themselves in an early deficit, falling in the first set, 25-21. Kent State grabbed the advantage for good at 16-15 in a set that was tied up five times before the Golden Flashes took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | Eastern Michigan fell in the second set, 25-22. KSU grabbed the lead at 13-12 in a set that was knotted up five times.

SET 3 | Despite great efforts, the Green and White dropped the third set, losing the match to the Golden Flashes. A powerful defensive showing wasn't enough as the Eagles lost the set, 25-23. Eastern totaled nine of the team's 12 blocks in the final set. 

Match Notes
» Freshman Carlina Bender (Hudsonville, Mich.-Hudsonville) had a team-high two aces in the loss. This feat matched her career-high, set last night, Oct. 7, against Ohio University. 
» The Eastern Michigan front row had a day defensively, registering 12 blocks in the match, to the Golden Flash's seven. This is the third match in the 2022 campaign the Eagles have tallied double digit blocks, the last two coming against the University of Virginia, Sept. 3, with 10 blocks, and against the University of Louisiana, Aug. 26, with 15.
» As a team, EMU defeated its opponent in terms of kills, 35-32. Chase paced the Eagles with nine kills, moving her career total to 668, the second best career total on the team behind senior Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio.-Newark Catholic), who currently holds 756.
» Basham tallied seven kills in the match. The Ohio native has now registered at least seven kills in all but two matches this season.
» The Green and White collected a match-high 20 digs from McMahon. The rookie continues to lead the Eagles in digs and has tallied double digits digs in every game this season for a total 267. 
» Eastern Michigan attackers were helped by a match-high 29 assists from sophomore Kendall Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-University). Burk set her career high in assists the night before against Ohio with 43.
» Sophomore Madeline Timmerman (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Central) registered a total of eight kills for the match. With this occurrence, she has now tied her season-high of eight kills, now done three different times. Additionally, the sophomore provided eight total blocks over the weekend adding to her total 45. 

Historical Notes
» Eastern's  all-time record against the Golden Flashes falls to 37-23-1. Today's match marks the sixth time the Eagles have fallen in three sets to Kent State. 
» The three-set loss is the seventh match of the 2022 season decided by three sets. EMU is currently 1-6 in those three-set matches. Moreover, the Eastern Michigan volleyball team has competed in 36 three-set matches in the Dorton era, with a 12-24 record.
» Chase registered her 77th block solo in an Eastern Michigan uniform. The middle blocker is now two block-solos away from holding sole-possession of sixth all time in EMU volleyball program history. Emily Busch (2001-2004) holds the no. 6 position with 79.
