EMU Volleyball Dominates Miami, 3-0

The Eagles recorded a season-high 10 aces in the win

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan volleyball team secured a three-set sweep over the Miami University RedHawks Friday, Oct. 14, on the road at Millett Hall.

The conference victory improved Eastern Michigan's record to 2-17 overall and 1-6 in MAC action.

Senior Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ontario-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Eagles attack while grabbing nine blocks from to lead the Green and White defensively.  Freshman Emma McMahon (Monoreville, Ind.-Bellmont) also tallied 14 digs in the win. 

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles endured a back-and-forth first set thriller, which featured five lead changes and was tied nine times, before the Green and White took it 28-26. Neither team led by more than four points in the match. Along with a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Miami attacks, Eastern Michigan recorded three aces in the opening set. 

SET 2 | Eastern Michigan took set two 25-22 to quickly grab a 2-0 lead. The Eagles never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 8-7 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Eagles took over the lead. The Eastern Michigan offense also got a boost from three aces, bringing the team total to six through just two sets.

SET 3 | Eastern Michigan closed the match in a 3-0 sweep after winning the third set. The Eagles took control of the stanza early when the score was 2-1 and never trailed to win 25-11. The Green and White led by as many as 14 points at 24-10 before closing out the third set. The Eastern Michigan offense also got a boost from four additional aces in the stanza. Eastern Michigan's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four more Miami attacks. 

Game Notes
» The Eagles tallied 10 service aces in the win over Miami, the most by the team in a single game this season. The number marks the first time the Green and White have put up double digits in that category since the Eagles made 12 service aces against Ball State University, Nov. 12, 2021. 
» Sophomore Kendall Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-University) grabbed a team-high three aces to lead the Eagles, just one short of her career-high set against Michigan State University, Aug. 27, 2022. Senior Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio.-Newark Catholic) and junior Bella Hommes (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) also snagged two service aces apiece. 
» Chase recorded a team-high nine blocks total blocks, just one short of her season-high set against the University of Louisiana, Aug. 26. The Canadian now sits at fourth in the MAC this season in total blocks with 74. 
» Chase also led the Eagles in kills with ten, bringing her season total to 169. The fifth year senior has now recorded double-digit kills in seven games so far this season. Basham followed Chase in kills with seven. 
» McMahon stretched her streak of double digit digs to five games, recording 14 tonight to bring her season total to 281. 
» Burk also led Eastern Michigan in assists with 28, making tonight the 16th time this season the sophomore has recorded double digit assists in a single game. The sophomore snagged all but one of the Eagles' assists in the victory. 

Historical Notes
» Tonight's win marks the second sweep of the season for the Eagles, the first coming over Radford University, Sept. 16. 
» Eastern Michigan now sports a 712-744-16 overall record and stands 281-368-1 in Mid-American Conference play.
» Under Head Coach Darcy Dorton, the Green and White now hold a 30-64 overall record and stand 19-42 in league play.
