Men finish third overall, women in 11th
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country program took a strong outing from two men's runners and turned into a third-place finish at the Penn State Nationals, hosted by Penn State University, Oct. 14. The women tallied an 11th place finish overall.
"It was a good showing for us," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "Our athletes fought hard on a tough course. For the women, we were without one of our top runners today, but it was great to see some others step up. Our men performed very well to finish third. This gives us some good momentum heading into this next stretch before the MAC meet."
"It was another really positive step forward for the guys as a team," said Head Coach Mark Rinker. "We are continuing to build a lot of confidence heading into the MAC."
A third-place finish from standout senior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) paced the Eagles today as he finished the five mile run in 25:03.1. Sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) was shortly behind Magnusson, crossing the finish line in 25:09.7 to claim fifth place. Magnusson and Gualter's finishes propelled the Eagles to a third-place team finish, ahead of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA)'s ninth-ranked Syracuse University.
Eastern's men also got top 50 finishes from senior Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River) (26th - 26:02.3), senior Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario-St. Mary's Kitchener) (33rd - 26:09.4), and sophomore Linus Vennemann (Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany-Gymnasium "In Der Wüste") (45th - 26:24.1).
For the second consecutive week, junior Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya-Middle Tennessee State) paced the Eastern women, claiming 33rd in the 6k race with a time of 21:34.6. Senior Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) was the second Eagle harrier across the finish line, placing 51st with a time of 21:56.4.
Eastern will be back in action a week from today, Oct. 21, at home for the EMU Fall Classic. The meet will be held at the Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich., with a scheduled 5:30 p.m. start.
