Thrower Newlyn Stephenson and sprinter Kilani Harvey earn league honors
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program saw two student-athletes earn Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Week honors in junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Academy) and sophomore Kilani Harvey (Orlando, Fla.-Jones (Highland C.C.)), the league office announced today, Jan. 27.
Stephenson produced a toss of 23.22m to take second at the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 22. The Gary, Ind. native's mark set a school record, topping teammate Taige Bryant's (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) 22.85m heave set last weekend at the Akron Quad Meet, Jan. 14. The junior's throw ranks first in the Mid-American Conference and third in the country. Additionally, 23.22m would have been good enough for third in the weight throw at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. This is Stephenson's second time in his career picking up the conference's weekly honor.
Harvey took third in the 60m dash in 7.55 at the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 22, the fastest time for any Eagle in the indoor season and a personal-best clip. Moreover, her 60 time paces the Mid-American Conference. The sophomore also rounded out the top-10 in the 200, crossing the finish line in 25.26. For Harvey, the weekly award is the second of her career at EMU.
Up next for the Eagles, the multis will be participating in Jet's Pizza Invitational, Jan. 28-29. The two-day meet, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University, kicks off on Friday at 11:15 a.m. and picks up at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
